Richard W.
Powell, Jr.
age 51, of 4081 Fourth Street S.E., New Philadelphia (Wainright), Ohio, died Sunday evening, May 19, 2013 in Union Hospital at Dover after becoming ill at his home. He was born June 10, 1961 in Dover, Ohio and was the son of the late Richard W., Sr. and Betty Lee Fowler Powell Gasser. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a grandson, Steven Coen. He was a semi-truck driver, retired from Sugarcreek Cartage, and had also driven for several other trucking companies. Richard was fond of collecting fishing lures, and was proud of his collection of Lionel and American Flyer electric trains. He was a big fan of Harley-Davidson motorcycles, and had the distinction of owning a Harley-Davidson Sportster. To relax, he enjoyed fishing, and was proud to share the love of the sport with his daughters. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who will be missed for his wry sense of humor that often targeted his family.
He is survived by his wife, Louise Cottis Powell, whom he married March 17, 1984; his three daughters, Amy Powell of Newcomerstown, Ohio, Autum L. Powell of Minerva, Ohio, and Angel Powell of the home; his four grandchildren, Rickey Owens, Nicholas Owens, Jordan Owens, and Jace Daugherty, all of Newcomerstown; two sisters, Carol Susan Powell of Uhrichsville, Ohio, and Sylvia Jane Himes of New Philadelphia; and Duke, his best friend and loyal dog.
In accordance with Richard's wishes, he has been cremated and the family will schedule a memorial event at a later date. The Baxter-Gardner Funeral Home at Sherrodsville is handling arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home for the benefit of the family. To leave an online condolence message, please visit the funeral home website.
