90, of New Philadelphia died Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2013 at Union Hospital following a brief illness. Born Jan. 19, 1923 in Dover he was a son of the late Webster and Anna Moser Wertz. Cal was also preceded in death by three brothers, Glen, Laverne and Gerald Wertz. He retired from Glass Lumber in New Philadelphia after 35 years of service. He was a member of Ruslin Hills Church and also belonged to the Dover VFW, Eagles and Moose. Cal loved music, and was the leader and founder of the Wertz Trio. His group was well known in the area as they played at many clubs and weddings throughout Tuscarawas County for over 50 years. Cal's other passions included working in his garden and woodworking.
A wonderful and loving husband, father and grandfather, Cal will be sadly missed by his wife of 68 years, Betty Cox Wertz whom he married on March 24, 1945; daughters, Pat (Jerry) Rufener of New Philadelphia and Cindy (Jack) Arbogast of Bolivar; sisters, Agnes Seward of New Philadelphia and Maxine (Glen) Rothacher of Dover; grandchildren, Scott and Brian Rufener, Kelly (Josh) Gintz and Holly Arbogast and great-grandchildren, Cody and Scott Rufener II.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, Oct. 18 at 1:30 in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home and Crematory at Dover with Rev. Duane Houser officiating. Interment will be in the Ridgecrest Memory Gardens. Following the burial, a funeral luncheon will be held in the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center.
