Mary Helen H. Roberts Harrison, 94, of Kankakee, IL., formerly of Gilman, IL., and Pinellas Park, FL., died at 3:03 A..M., Sunday, August 4, 2013 at the Riverside Medical Center, Kankakee, IL.
Her funeral will be at 3:00 P.M. Thursday, August 8, 2013 at the United Methodist Church, Gilman with Rev. Anita Munden officiating. Entombment will be in the Gilman Mausoleum.
Visitation will be from 1:30 to 3:00 P.M. Thursday, August 8, 2013 at the United Methodist Church, Gilman.
Memorials may be made to United Methodist Church, American Legion Post 499 both of Gilman or to the Donor's Choice.
Mary Helen was born on July 26, 1919, near La Hogue, IL., to William A. and Helen "Nell" Rebecca (Johnson) Haubach. She attended the rural Haubach Grade School, and graduated from Gilman Community High School in 1937, as class salutatorian. Mary Helen attended Gallagher Business School in Kankakee for one year. She was a bookkeeper and managed the offices at automobile dealerships in Gilman, Kankakee, Chicago Heights, Decatur and Harvey, changing locations several times in order to set up new bookkeeping systems for the dealerships. She also worked as personal bookkeeper to the Vice-President at Booz, Allen and Hamilton in Chicago. Before her retirement, she kept books at Miles Laboratory in Kankakee and was the office manager at the Elks' Country Club in Aroma Park, IL. Mary Helen moved to Sojourns Independent Living in Kankakee in September 2012.
She married Wendell V. "Sweede" Harrison on January 30, 1997 in Pinellas Park, FL. He died on June 11, 2001.
Mary Helen is survived by a stepson and two stepdaughters-in-law, William V. (Jean) Harrison of Pontiac, IL., and Nancy Harrison of Urbana, IL.
Seven Step grandchildren.
Eleven Step great grandchildren.
She is also survived by numerous cousins and friends.
Mary Helen was preceded in death by her parents, husband, an infant brother, stepson Ronald E. Harrison, in addition to numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Gilman, where she also belonged to the Mary Martha Circle. Mary Helen had attended the Golden Gate Church in Pinellas Park. She was a former member of the Golden Gate Nuggest Club, and the Golden Gate Theater and Music Club. She had been a member and the treasurer of both Golden Gate Women's Club and the Golden Gate Shuffle Board Club. Other memberships included the Gilman American Legion Auxiliary Post 499, the Rebekah Lodge of Gilman and the Benevolent Protective Order of the Elks of Watseka, IL., as a widow member.
