The fifth child of Katharine Kinne and Cornelius Harry Snell, he was born in 1923 in the old family home on North Main Street, which stood on the site of the present-day Herkimer Library. He was also instrumental in preserving the scenic northern end of Otsego Lake.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Sigrid Leube Snell; by two children, Andrea Snell, of Ridgewood, NJ, and Dietrich Snell, of Manhattan; and grandchildren, Julia Workman, Marcus Workman, Jack Snell and Alixandra Snell. He is also survived by his sisters, Cornelia Bensley, of Danville, CA, Katharine Sigety, of Pipersville, PA, and Mary Martin, of Stouffville, Ontario, Canada. He was predeceased by his brother, Harry Snell, and sister, Julia Snell Wood.

On behalf of the Snell-Zimmerman-Timmerman Family Reunion we wish to express our condolences of the loss of George Snell who was very active in our family reunion. We will all miss his active role on the family reunion activities. We will plan to honor his memory at our annual Family Reunion the first Sunday in August and hope that family members will be able to come to the event which will be held at our historic Snells Bush Church

Mr. Snell was a staunch supporter of friends of historical Herkimer county to save the historical 1834 jail. His many handwritten notes are very special to us. He will be missed.
