Cowling, Vincent F.
, Cowling, Vincent F. PALM BEACH SHORES, Fla. Esteemed mathematician, Vincent F. Cowling, emeritus professor, The University at Albany, passed away on August 19, 2016, in Palm Beach Shores. He was 97. Cowling received his Ph.D. in mathematics from Rice University in 1944. His academic career spanned 42 years and included appointments at Ohio State University, Lehigh University, the University of Kentucky and Rutgers University. In Fall 1967, Cowling was named leading professor and chairman of the Department of Math, The University at Albany. Under his leadership, the S.U.N.Y Albany Math Department changed from an almost purely teaching department to a center of excellence in both teaching and research. In 1967, 15 active mathematicians joined the faculty with an additional five research mathematicians coming to Albany in 1968. Cowling remained chairman of the Math Department until Fall 1972, when he was named dean of the College of Sciences and Math. In Fall 1979, Cowling returned to the S.U.N.Y. Albany Math Department until his retirement in June 1987. Cowling was a member of the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton N.J., in 1966-67. He spent additional fall and spring terms at The Institute as well as the summer of 1980. After retirement, Cowling relocated to Palm Beach Shores with his beloved wife, Charlene Lewis. Summer's were spent in Woods Hole, Cape Cod, Mass. where Cowling worked on research in math and genetics at the Marine Biological Lab. During Winters in Florida, Cowling became proficient in Pov-Ray programming creating an impressive digital art portfolio. To borrow words from Isak Dinesen in Out Of Africa, " in the days and hours when we were at home or on the road traveling, we spoke of nothing ordinary .... or, of anything at all, that was small." Cowling is survived by his wife of 35 years, Charlene Lewis; sons, John Cowling, Charles Cowling, Thomas Cowling; daughters Margaret Anne Cowling, Janie Cowling Fauconneau; and grandsons, Ross Cowling and Owen Cowling. From the start of his academic career Cowling's commitment to mathematics research was evident. With his doctoral dissertation directed by Szolem Mandelbrojt whose own doctoral dissertation was directed by Jacques Hadamard, Cowling was part of a distinguished trio: Hadamard, Mandelbrojt and Cowling. There was no escape. From the beginning he was grabbed by mathematics and that gorgeous subject never turned Cowling loose. As a card from Cowling's son Charles said, "it was a beautiful life."
