Christopher Schmid

Schmid, Christopher CLIFTON PARK Christopher "Chris" Schmid, 79, beloved husband of 53 years to Beryl Ellen Hinds Schmid of Clifton Park, peacefully entered into eternal life surrounded by his family on Tuesday, July 30, 2013 at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady. Born in Jamaica, Queens, N.Y., he was the son of the late Hermann and Lucienne Ganter Schmid. He graduated from Orange County Community College, earned his bachelors of science degree in labor relations from Cornell University in Ithaca, and his master's degree in education from the University of Rochester. Mr. Schmid was a pioneer in the local real estate industry, having bought a real estate, mortgage, insurance and construction company under one roof. He was a partner in the BH Group in Albany. He was the president of Realty USA in Clifton Park and a partner in Statewide Funding in Clifton Park. He was a high school teacher and coach prior to joining the physical education faculty at Union College. While at Union, he was a coach of basketball, football and lacrosse for the Fighting Dutchmen. In 2009, he was inducted into the Union College Hall of Fame as well as the Orange County Community College Hall of Fame. His basketball teams won 10 or more games four times during his coaching tenure (1962-70), a time when teams played an average of 15 games. Since retiring from teaching and coaching in 1970 to pursue a successful real estate career, Schmid has been a loyal and longtime supporter of both SUNY Orange and Union College. His support and allegiance to Union extends beyond the most ardent alumnus. He founded and organized the Fighting Dutchmen Gridiron Club, and also is considered to be the prime mover in establishing the Sig Makofsky Basketball Tournament. He helped secure video editing technology for Union teams, assisted in the backing for new bleachers at Bailey Field, and has guided countless former student-athletes professionally as a true mentor and friend of Union Athletics. He has singlehandedly provided countless scholarships and is one of both of the college's staunchest benefactors. Chris was a member of St. George's Episcopal Church in Clifton Park and the Edison Club in Rexford. He enjoyed golfing in his spare time.
