Ganong, H. Howard HALFMOON H. Howard Ganong, age 85, of Halfmoon passed away on Thursday, November 14, 2013 at Ellis Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Born on October 20, 1928, he was the son of the late Horton and Florence Ganong. He was predeceased by his sister, Evelyn Purdon. Howard was an MP in the U.S. Army in Germany. He retired as a restaurant manager and owned his own restaurant. He was very active in the Temple Baptist Church. He served as an elder, bible teacher, and youth counselor. He was an avid sportsman, and was a fan of the New York Yankees. He was a five-time Grand National Speed Skating Champion, and was a contender for the Olympic
Team in 1954. He served as the chaplain for the Albany-Colonie Diamond Dogs from 1995 to 2002. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Ruth E. Ganong; daughters, JoAnn Spooner, and Cindy (Don) Acker; sons, Chris (Kathie) Ganong, and Gary D. (Stacy) Ganong; grandchildren, Kristen, Caitlin, Petra, and Abbigail; and great-grandchildren, Gavin and Keegan. Calling hours will be held on Monday, November 18, 2013 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Temple Baptist Church, 142 Lower Newtown Road in Halfmoon, with a funeral service at 7 p.m. Burial will be in the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Schenectady City Mission, 425 Hamilton St., Schenectady, NY 12305.
