John J. McBride Sr.

McBride, John J. Sr. MECHANICVILLE John J. McBride, Sr., affectionately known as "J.J." of South Third Ave., died Sun- day, May 19, 2013 in the home where he was born 84 years ago. He was the son of the late William and Clara Wojtowicz McBride, Sr., and husband of 43 years to the late Teresa J. Gavin McBride, who died May 10, 1995. John joined the US Marine Corps during World War II, serving from 1945-1948, stationed in occupied Japan and China during his active duty. After military service, he went to work for New York State Electric and Gas Co. of Mechanicville, for 38 years, serving as chief gas fitter, retiring in 1988, or as J.J. used to say, "out the gate in '88." A charter member of the Hillcrest Fire Dept., he was a patriotic American, holding memberships in the American Legion Post 91, and the V.F.W. Post 6328, both of Mechanicville, where he was a past commander of both organizations. He was also a member of the China Marine Assoc. and the Marine Corps League. A noted and reputed feisty guy, J.J. was actually a soft at heart soul, especially to his grandchildren and great- grandchildren. Sunday morning pancake breakfasts became a tradition at his home, cooked by J.J. himself. Those who visited on Sundays were treated to good food and the sound of Polka music filling the house. He loved family gatherings with his children and their families, especially Thanksgiving, Christmas and the Fourth of July. He also loved his siblings and their families. Despite enduring two fires in his home, the most recent being in January, he was happy to spend his final days in the old homestead. Sadly, John was also predeceased by an infant daughter, Catherine Ann; his daughter-in-law, Judith McBride; brothers, William, James and George and sisters, Leona Serbalik, Esther Peregrim and Agnes Dumar. Survivors include his children, Ralph (Teresa) of Waterford, John Jr.(Jean) of Mechanicville, Deborah McBride of Va., Clara (Edward) Cote, Sheila McBride (Mason Batchelder), Thomas (Cathy) and Michael (Debra) McBride, all of Mechanicville and Irene (Joseph) Zecca of Stillwater. Also grandchildren, Sue and Jennifer Jean McBride, Johnny, Emily and Catherine Callaham, Meaghan Cote, Vincent Laurenzo, Krista Laurenzo Phelps, Anthony Laurenzo, Katie McBride Bruce, Melissa McBride Salvadore, Laura McBride, Michaela McBride Miranda, Julie, Stephanie and Jordan McBride and Monica, Katelyn and Jacob Zecca; great-grandchildren, Addison, Jack, Matthew, Dylan, Ava, Elliana; siblings, Mary Cuilla, Joseph (Carole) and Thomas (Sandy) McBride; companion, Luella Wood and sisters-in-law, Mona and Patricia McBride, Irene Galomb and Geraldine Johnson. John's family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the Eddy Visiting Nurses, as well as aides, Laura, Cathy, and Brenda for the care, compassion, and dedication given to him over the past several months. Calling hours will be held at All Saints on the Hudson South Church, 121 North Main St., Mechanicville on Wednesday, May 22, from 4-8 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held on Thursday at 12 p.m. at the church. Burial with military honors to follow at St. Paul's Cemetery. In honor of his wife, Teresa and daughter-in-law, Judy, memorial contributions may be made to the Capital District Cancer Resource Foundation, PO Box 610, Latham, NY 12110 in memory of John J.
