Moore, John R. COLONIE John R. Moore, 75, a former Colonie resident died September 14, 2013 at the Albany Stratton V.A. Medical Center. He had been there since early July. He was in the hospice unit and received the utmost in care and dignity from that unit's staff. John was born December 2, 1937 in Ellsworth, Maine to Hazel and Robert L. Moore. He was a graduate of Draper High School and went on to Union College, both in Schenectady. While attending Union, he was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity. In the late 50s his life really changed when he joined the Army
. After basic and special training he went to Turkey, then Vietnam as a member of the Army Security Agency. While in Vietnam he received a Purple Heart
for reasons that are obvious. Mr. Moore's unit was the first since the Korean war
to receive a meritorious unit commendation. The award was given to units for exceptional conduct in performance of service for at least six months during the period of operations against an armed enemy. He was in Vietnam for five years and when asked he went into harm's way. He was also a 14-year member of the North East Vietnam Veterans Reunion Association, attending his last committee meeting September 2013. After the Army in late 1966 he began as a cub reporter
for the Schenectady Gazette, eventually earning his own column "Albany, Colonie and More." He was press secretary to the lieutenant governor of New York for about two years. Then he did consulting work and freelance writing for politicians, school districts and associations involved with government. He eventually retired from the insurance business. He met his future "child bride" while at the Gazette and would later marry Eleanor Ferraro. Together they would have two wonderful sons, Robert E. Moore and Eben N. Moore. He felt they were the most significant achievement in his life. A very loyal family member, he remembered fondly the many family gatherings both at home and at his camp in Maine. As far as family history he felt "If you've seen one horse thief, you've seen them all!" He is survived by his ex-wife, Ellie of Colonie; son, Robbie of Colonie; son, Eben of Brooklyn; brother, Parker and wife Elaine of Cape Coral, Fla.; brother, Jim and wife Patty of Rochester; cousin, Buddy and wife Ellen of Ellsworth, Maine; good friends, George, Jim and Mary Murphy, Bill Fay and the Breakfast Club. John was preceded in death by his mother, Hazel; stepmother, Agnes and father, Robert L. Moore. A graveside service will be held Monday, September 30, 2013 at 10 a.m. at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery. Anyone wishing to make a donation is asked to contribute to their favorite veterans organization.
