Thomas Hastings Watthews

WATTHEWS Thomas Hastings VOORHEESVILLE Thomas Hastings Watthews of Voorheesville, passed away peacefully on March 12, 2013. He was the son of Jean Bowman Watthews and Thomas Watthews of Patchogue, N.Y., and is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Jane and John Belzak of Patchogue, and nieces and nephews Bennett, John, Gregory, Deborah, Brooke and Jody. Tom's extended family spans the United States, Canada, and Scotland where his ancestral relatives still reside. Born in Patchogue on April 28, 1936, and educated in Patchogue public schools, Tom earned bachelor's and master's degrees at the State University of New York at Albany and advanced studies at the University of Minnesota. He taught biology at Bethlehem Central middle and high schools for 33 years, working concurrently for 30 years as a research entomologist in the Adirondack's for the New York State Museum; for the past 25 years, Tom was employed as a consultant by the State Education Science Department, creating biology Regents exams. His passions in life included opera, with 45 years of regular attendance at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, and in countries worldwide. Travel, coin collecting, gardening and cooking for his friends brought great pleasure to Tom. A dedicated actor, his 50-year stage career included performing, directing and technical involvement in such venues as Albany Civic Theater, Schenectady Light Opera Company, The Village Stage, Slingerlands Players, Live at the Lakehouse, Cabaret Theater, and Four Seasons Dinner Theater. Tom's family and friends extend their sincere appreciation for the many kindnesses and tender care provided by Dr. David Shaffer and the staff of the Hematology/ Oncology Department at Albany Medical Center. A private interment service was held previously at Albany Rural Cemetery.
