Anna McDonald Obituary

McDonald, Anna Mae Hughes ALBANY Anna Mae (Hughes) McDonald, 90, passed from this life to the next on April 26, 2017. Born in Albany on August 31, 1926, she was daughter of the late Raymond J. Hughes and Anna May Heim. She attended St. James School and Cathedral High School. She married Edmund McDonald in 1946 and they had 61 wonderful, loving years together. She was a communicant of Blessed Sacrament Church where she assisted for many years as a hospitality greeter and served in the Food Pantry. Anna Mae worked for many years at Central Variety Hardware Store, and then for New York State in the Pharmacy Section of the Education Department's Office of the Professions. She served as treasurer at Arbor Hill Little League from the late 1950's until the mid-1960's while her three sons were playing ball. Anna Mae was a member for many years of the Albany Ladies Ancient Order of the Hibernians, JFK Division and the Colonie Lisha Kill Seniors. Anna Mae was a familiar face in the Central Avenue neighborhood due to her daily walks during which she greeted and endeared herself to everyone, from police officers to students from Albany High School. One of the engaging qualities that she exhibited was her contagious laughter that caused others to brighten up and laugh along with her. Anna Mae (Ann) was the loving mother of Michael (Diana) McDonald of Guilderland, Dennis (Jeanne) McDonald of Clifton Park, and Sharon (Kenneth) Leonard of Niskayuna. She was predeceased by her husband, Edmund; and her son, Edmund J. (Buzzy) McDonald. Grandmother of Lauren (Scott) Trembley of Colonie, Christine (Joshua) Skubon of Schenectady, Jason McDonald of Schenectady, James (Dianne) Simpkins of Pattersonville, Daniel Leonard of Saratoga Springs, and Marissa and Carle McDonald of Guilderland; and great-grandmother of Abigail and Logan Trembley, Anna Mae Skubon, Jason McDonald, Keegan Simpkins and Connor Goodman. She was the sister of Raymond J. Hughes Jr. of Colonie; predeceased by siblings, Elizabeth Brown, Kathryn Thomas, and James Hughes. She is also survived by three sisters-in-law, one brother-in-law, and many nieces and nephews. The family is especially grateful to Ray and Dee Hughes, Avis Hughes, Joanne Brown, and Mickey and Maryann McDonald for their unwavering devotion to Anna Mae while living at Kingsway Manor. We also extend our heartfelt appreciation to the staff of Kingsway Manor for their dedication and attention during Anna Mae's five years in assisted living, and Ellis Hospital and Kingsway Arms Nursing Center for their care during her final days. Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Anna Mae's family Friday, April 28, 4 to 7 p.m. in the McVeigh Funeral Home, 208 N. Allen St., Albany. Funeral services on Saturday, April 29, at 10 a.m. in the McVeigh Funeral Home, thence to the Blessed Sacrament Church, Albany at 10:30 a.m. where a funeral Mass will be celebrated. The Rite of Committal will be held in the Calvary Cemetery, Glenmont, immediately following the funeral Mass. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions in Anna Mae's memory be made to Blessed Sacrament Church, 607 Central Ave., Albany, NY 12206.
