Constance Casey Obituary

Casey, Sister Constance SNJM ALBANY Sister Constance Casey (Sister Jean Helen), a Sister of the Holy Names for 50 years, was born into eternal life on March 14, 2012 at the Hospice Inn at St. Peter's Hospital. Daughter of the late John J. (Jack) and Helen Frank Casey, she was born on January 11, 1942 in Troy, N.Y. She graduated from Sacred Heart School, Troy, and the Academy of the Holy Names in 1959. She entered the Sisters of the Holy Names on July 2, 1959 and professed her vows on August 22, 1961. She received a B.A. in history from Medaille College, Buffalo, and her M.A. in educational administration from SUNY Albany. Sister Connie began her teaching career in elementary schools in Winchester, Va. and Liverpool, N.Y. While teaching high school English, history and theology at the Academy of the Holy Names in Tampa, Fla., she was also director of the Academy's boarding school. In 1969 Sister Connie became principal of AHN in Tampa, and in 1977 she was named principal of the Academy of the Holy Names in Albany. In 1990 she became president of AHN Albany, serving in that position through June 2009, at which time she continued to assist and support AHN as president emeritus. Ever dedicated to serve, Sister Connie was board president of the World's Window, which helps children and families in underprivileged countries. She also served on the Ladies of Charity Board, the Maternity and Early Childhood Foundation Board, assisted in the coordination of the Junior Ladies of Charity, and moderated the reading club at Blessed Sacrament School, Albany. She was also a member of the research task force for the feasibility of a Cristo Rey High School for economically disadvantaged students in the Capital District. Sister Connie held leadership positions in her religious congregation and was active in service activities and volunteer organizations wherever she resided. She served as co-president of the Capital Region Independent Schools Association, and served on the Chamber of Commerce, Women of Excellence program and the Tech Valley Task Force. She was active in the Catholic Charities AIDS services, the Red Cross Blood Donor program and in numerous other efforts in local organizations. She has been the recipient of the Monsignor Burns Award, the Albany-Colonie Chamber's Women of Excellence Distinguished Career Award and the Capital Region Foundation Women's Trailblazer Award. In 2011, she was inducted into the AHN Sports Hall of Fame and received the AHN Founders and Community Leadership Award, subsequently renamed for her. Sister Connie devoted her professional life to providing quality education for young women and to seeking ways to extend this opportunity to the poor and economically disadvantaged. As campus president of AHN Albany, she established the Partners in Education program. In her years at AHN in Albany, Sister Connie provided charismatic leadership that engaged all members of the school community in the mission of educating young women for leadership, academic excellence and service to others. Led by her great love and compassion for others, she was always eager to find new avenues to empower others for better lives. Her leadership skills were marked by a rare vision, sincere concern and respect for the individual person, and an ability to encourage people to do their best. Sister Connie is survived by her sister, Mary Beth O'Brien of Albany, brother, Frank (Penny) of Albany and sister, Ellen (Thomas) Gorke of Watchung, N.J. It is so ironic that a huge beautiful rainbow was over AHN the morning after Sister Connie passed. The year I graduated our senior graduation song was Over the Rainbow. Everytime I see a rainbow I will know it will be her way of keeping that beautiful smile alive. Sister Connies keen understanding presence made hard days in high school so light. I remember walking into her office for weekly advisory meetings and being able to breathe in fresh positive energy. Sister Connie was a beautiful messenger from God. There is no doubt that when she came face to face with him in heaven that his first words were Thank you! She made the presence of God alive in her day to day interaction with everyone in her path. I pray that my daughter has a guiding light in her life like Sister Connie was for me.Sister Connie I will continue to smile at strangers because from your example it can brighten anyone's day. Thank you and until we meet again....

Connie,

Classmate at AHN, Class of 1959 and dear friend.

It was such an honor to have known you and watch your wonderful accomplishments.

My deepest sympathy to Mary Beth, Frank, Ellen and all of your family. You will be sorely missed.

I will always remember the wonderful times we all had together, our Trip to NYC when we all had such a great time, the graduation party hosted by your parents and the Dyers at your place in Lake George and spending time at your home in Averill Park and jumping off the dock and all of us washing our hair in the Lake.

Most of our class have been keeping track of your last days through e-mail from Judy Weiss Draper or messages from Margie Dyer Reilly or Marge Fennell and Phyllis D'Antonio. We have all prayed that you would not suffer anymore. Rest in peace, dear, dear friend.

Sister Connnie was my freshman and sophmore homeroom teacher at AHN Tampa. I remember how devastated we all felt when she left halfway through our Sophomore year in order to return as our principal. We were all thrilled to have her back as our hip and young principal. Mostly Sister Connie was a great teacher, friend and leader. It was a priviledge to have known her. RIP

It's funny to think that such a calm, gentle soul helped create some of the most strong, independent women I know. In a world where those that shout the loudest are heard, it turns out that you can really make a difference in a community with a quiet voice backed by grace, dignity, respect and a true compassion for everyone around you. You will be missed by so many, Sister Connie.

At Mass, Father Lanese announced that an icon among women religious died this week...Connie. I went back more than 60 years. We five Hartigans and six Caseys would spill out of our nearby homes for the short walk to Sacred Heart School each day. All the Caseys had the beautiful smile of Helen and the twinkle that accompanied Jack's sense of humor ... qualities Connie never lost to the last time I saw her nearly a year ago. The Caseys have shown many of us, certainly me, how to accept great blessings and great sadnesses and trials with equal grace, forbearance and humility. Connie joins her beloved brothers John and Phil;my brothers join me in sending condolences to Mary Beth, Frank and Ellen.

Sister Connie had the most amazing smile and eyes. When I was goofing off, I loved getting her to laugh - and when I was not trying my best...her eyes said everything - that she loved me, that I was in her heart and that I needed to stop being so silly. Knowing she is gone makes me cry. So many women are joined to one another because of her. We are all stronger and brighter for having been loved by Sister Connie.

All my love goes out to her family, Miss. Vigliante and the Holy Names community.

To the Casey Family and to the Sisters of the Holy Names Community,

Sister Connie and I first met when she was a freshman and I was a senior at AHN on Madison Avenue where we both had the benefit of being educated and mentored by the wonderful sisters of the Holy Names. Later we would cross paths again during my nieces 13 years and my daughters four years at AHN as well as alumnae reunions etc. Sister Connie is one of the last of an order of women who may not come again. Do not weep that she is gone. Thank God that she was here.

March 16, 2012

My daughter Kaira attended Holy Names during lower and middle school. Ironically though, Sister Connie knew Kaira and always was there with a kind word and smile. With apparent ease, she led a top school with intelligence and kindness. She is a top example of a woman with strengh who was able to lead without the current known bickering in our world. Strange to me was the fact that she also knew who I was as our paths did not frequently pass. I recently ran into her in a local establishment and the first thing she wanted to know was about my daughter Kaira and how she was faring. I am not of the Catholic faith but I feel that Holy Names gave my daughter a solid ground in kindness, morality . Some of her current friends are still alums of the school. I too found myself learning more about the ongoing issues of faith. Basically, I learned a respect of the Sisters that work at the school. Sister Connie was a one woman show who could be there for advice or just a smile, and I marveled at the way she was able to organize and conduct religious services. I will add her to my list of women of intelligence, power, with a much needed humbleness. With Sister Connie's leadership, I feel that my daughter has a much more solid ground in life and I, too, grew in my knowledge of her faith and its integration in everyday life.
We definitely need more leaders in the world like Sister Connie. I miss her, as I know my daughter Kaira does.
You did a good job, Sister Connie. And you will remain a top example for a multi-faceted life and a leader of intelligence. You are a good example for young women and for all of us in general.
You are missed. Godspeed.

Sister Connie's light will shine eternally from heaven as it does within each of the AHN girls whose lives she influenced.
I knew Sister Connie as I am a parent of a Holy Names graduate and sister to one as well. She touched many lives and made us better from it. I admired her leadership and I will always remember her kind manner.

What a great loss to The Holy Names Community, Capital District and my family. I feel so blessed to have had her as an influence in my life and my family growing up.
She had such a wonderful, positive enrgy about everything she touched.
My prayers are with the Casey /O'Brien family and Miss Vigliante. Her wonderful warm smile is now looking over all of us.

Sister Connie you were not only my advisor but you were my friend. I will alwyas remember our Friday afternoon meetings. I always looked forward to our visits. I remember seeing your face at my father's memorial service. You never gave up on me and always had wonderful words of inspiration for me. We lost an amazing person but Heaven received an angel. I met Sister Connie in Sister John of Mary's freshman class in 1955, even then she that aura of love and compassion that someone mentioned previously and it grew in grace and magnitude as we have all witnessed and experienced her gifts and talents. I am blessed to have been her fortunate classmate and lifetime admirerer. Though her physical presence has left us, I will always be aware of her Spirit which never leaves us.
Thank you Connie.

To the Casey Family, the Sisters of the Holy Names, and Mary Ann Vigliante:

Sr. Connie was a compassionate, loving and devoted human being who embodied the mission of Mother Marie-Rose Durocher, foundress of the Sisters of the Holy Names, as well as the Academy of the Holy Names/Marylrose Academy motto: Esse Quam Videri. I will always remember her fondly from the years I worked with her as a member and President of the Board of Trustees, the Alumnae Council and the Alumnae Association. She was an inspiration to me.

Dear Sister Connie,
Thank you for helping us find who we are and protect and nurture your little charges til they graduated from the nest.
Much Love,
Bernae Rogers
This is for you -
There is a place I call my own
Where I can stand by the sea
And look beyond the things I've known
And dream that I might be free
Like a bird above the trees
Gliding gently on the breeze
I wish that all my life I'd be
Without a care and flying free
But life is not a distant sky
Without a cloud, without rain
And I can never hope that I
Can travel on without pain
Time goes swiftly on it's way
All too soon we've lost today
I cannot wait for skies of blue
Or dream so long
That life is through
So life's a song that I must sing, a gift of love I must share
And when I see the joy it brings, my spirits soar through the air
Like that bird up in the sky, life has taught me how to fly
now I know I can be
And now my heart is flying free

Sister Connie touched many lives with her warmth and her devotion to her life's mission in serving God through serving others.

My daughter and I are very grateful to have known Sr. Connie. She was a great source of inspiration to me with her quiet, dignified manner and her kind, welcoming acceptance of others and life. She was a positive source of power and loving example for so many girls and parents that knew her...A wonderful leader and religious person to behold. She will be missed!

Sister Connie was the first person I saw when I walked into the church at my father's funeral. She gave me a big hug and told me she loved me. I will remeber that forever. My best to Marybeth and family.

Although I graduated from Holy Names almost 15 years ago, my memories of Sister Connie are vivid. I recall her presence at every school event and her gentle voice as she greeted every student she encountered by name. As the years have gone by, I have come to appreciate her in a way I couldn't as a high school student. Sister Connie was a treasure.

I do not believe I will ever meet a woman so influential to others. She did it through soft words and a leadership that I know has been passed to my 2 nieces, one still in AHN and the other a sophomore at Quinnapiac University.I will miss your smiling face at functions and just seeing you quietly rounding a corner at the schoolYou are now able once again to watch over all of "your girls".Even though the tears may fall hard now knowing you are with the guardian angels that will watch over all of us makes your passing easier.I will see your influence every time I look in Victoria and Rebecca's face.
