VanDerwerken, Gary C. CLIFTON PARK Gary C. VanDerwerken, 70, of the Hollandale Apartments, died on Sunday, November 25, 2012 at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady after a long illness. He was born on August 28, 1942 in Troy, and was the son of the late Harry and Margaret Cruickshank VanDerwerken and stepson of the late Mary Fleming VanDerwerken. He was a graduate of Lansingburgh High School, class of 1960, and was a U.S. Navy veteran having served honorably from 1960 to 1966. Gary retired from General Electric in Schenectady, where he had been a machinist for 37 years. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Gary was a life member of the National Rifle Association and had been a member of the Clifton Park Fire Company. He is the beloved husband of Karen Surprenant VanDerwerken, whom he married on October 10, 1964. He is the devoted father of Lynn (Robert) McCormick of Clifton Park and Scott (April) VanDerwerken of Queensbury; brother of Donald (Barbara) VanDerwerken of Waterford and Roger (Janet) VanDerwerken of Freemont, Calif.; cherished grandfather of Robert and Margaret McCormick of Clifton Park and also survived by several nieces and nephews. Funeral will be held Thursday, November 29, 2012 at 11 a.m. from the Gordon C. Emerick Funeral Home, 1550 Route 9 in Clifton Park. Calling hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home. Interment, with full military honors, will be in the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville. Memorial contributions may be made to Dave's Dinners at United Church of Cohoes, 123 Mohawk St., Cohoes, NY 12047. Arrangements have been entrusted by the family to the Gordon C. Emerick Funeral Home.
