Brindisi, Grace A. DELMAR Grace Anne Brindisi, 88, passed away Tuesday, December 18, 2012. Born in Brooklyn, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Helen (Brengard) Fillyo. She graduated from Newtown High School in Queens, where she first met Dr. Brindisi. She attended Hunter College and later completed her degree at Queens College. While at Hunter College she worked on the literary magazine and wrote to e.e.cummings her favorite poet, receiving an answer. She married Dr. Brindisi on January 6, 1946. She served as a Girl Scout Leader, and later substituted in the Northport School District. In retirement she served as a president of the St. Vincent DePaul Society, actively helping the poor in Suffolk County. She enjoyed spending time with her beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren, traveling, sewing, creating seaweed collages, collecting quilts, decorating chocolate houses, camping, attending the Metropolitan Opera, and visiting Florida beaches. Mrs. Brindisi researched and completed a book on the life of her Alsatian relative Jean Batiste Foerhle, a Catholic Friar in Tanzania, Africa during the 1890's. At her last birthday she responded to a request for a speech by standing and saying."You are all fine people". She is survived by her devoted husband, Dr. John Brindisi; two daughters, Babette "Babs" Wilcox (Ellen Youssef) of Pleasant Valley and Nancy Smith (Theodore) of Delmar; three grandchildren, Blake Wilcox (Leah) of Northhampton, Pa., Peter Smith (Tracy) of Queens and Kate Smith of Boston, Mass.; two great-grandchildren, Emily Jean and Alex Wilcox; a sister, Ruth Hartmann; nieces and nephews, Lisa Harper (Richard), Eric Hartmann, Lucille Rizzuto (Ralph), Don Sabino, Cathy Ripoll (Bob), and Kathy Hoffman (Alan); treasured friends, Father Valentine Rubello, Likeu Lee (Lum) and Estelle Mintz (late Lester). Funeral services will be held Friday, December 21, 2012 at 10 am in the Daniel Keenan Funeral Home, Inc., 490 Delaware Ave., Albany. Relatives and friends are invited. Interment, Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery. A memorial Mass will be celebrated in St. Thomas the Apostle Church in July. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Transverse Myelitis Assn., 1787 Sutter Parkway, Powell, OH 43065-8806, Alzheimer's services, libraries, or an organization which assists the needy.
