Zink, James E. "Jim" BETHLEHEM James E. (Jim) Zink, 72, of Bethlehem, passed away on March 16, 2013 at Frye Regional Medical Center. Jim was born on October 5, 1940, in Buffalo, N.Y. He was the son of the late Louie and Beatrice Gallagher Zink. Jim was a member of St. Aloysius of Hickory. He entered the NY State Police in 1962 and retired as a lieutenant/zone commander after nearly 33 years of service. He was extremely proud of that career he held. After retirement, Jim became chief of police in Polk Co., Ga. for three years. Moving to North Carolina, Jim was hired at Wilkes Community College to become the lead instructor for the Criminal Justice Program, a position he held for nine years. He made many inroads into this curriculum and enjoyed teaching immensely. His hobbies included watching TV sports, especially his beloved "Dukies" basketball and the NY Yankees. He also enjoyed playing golf, traveling, having cookouts and game days with his neighbors and friends. Jim had a great sense of humor and enjoyed interacting with all people. Survivors include his wife of 26 years, Mary Jane Zink of the home; a son Sr. Master SGT (USAF) Michael Zink and wife Laura, of Pope Army Air Field, N.C.; two daughters, Janice Simmonsen and husband Ray of Evansville, Wisc. and Kathleen Rhodes and husband Bill of Calloway, Va.; two stepsons, Michael Dowd of Thomasville, N.C. and Patrick Dowd of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. The family will receive friends Tuesday, March 19, 2013 from 3 p.m.- 6 p.m. at Bass-Smith Funeral Home. The funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at 10 a.m. at St. Aloysius Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105. On-line condolences may be left for the family at bass-smithfuneralhome.com.
