Jacobs, Joan M. GREEN ISLAND Joan M. Jabon "Mummum" Jacobs, entered in to heaven's gates on Sunday, February 10, 2013 after a long illness, at home with her family by her side. She was born and raised in New York City and attended Washing-ton Erving P.S. 136. She graduated from the Bellevue School of Nursing, attaining her L.P.N. degree which she carried for 50 years. Joan worked at the Rusk Institute for many years and then at Albany Medical Center Hospital, when she moved to the Albany area in 1959. Joan continued serving her community wherever she lived, mainly in North Albany. Mom was instrumental in the development of the first food pantry on Orange and Pearl streets which led to many more becoming available. She was a foster parent in Albany to many, including Hope Smith-Cruz and Sara Couger, who loved her for helping them become the women they are today. Joan committed a lifetime to her profession, community and willingly gave of herself. She loved her family more than life itself. Joan was predeceased by her parents, Harold and Estelle Crawford; her two husbands, Mathieu Jabon and Theodore A. Jacobs; and her children, Leslie Diane, Mathieu and Ann Marie Jabon and Michael W. Harden. Joan leaves to mourn her loss, two children, Laura E. Harden-Massey and Antoine "Tony" Jabon; five grandchildren, Leslie (Ricky) Taylor, Jovan Joban, Alisha and Angela Jabon and Allonte' (Julio) Torres. Also surviving is her nephew, Derek Jackson, nine great-grandchildren and two very dear friends, Mary Jackson, William B. Harden and a host of family and friends. Funeral services will be Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at 10 a.m. at Mount Olive Southern Missionary Baptist Church in Albany. There will be no calling hours. Interment will be in Evergreen Memorial Park, Colonie. To leave a special message for the family online, visit NewcomerAlbany.com
