Shafer, Judy A. QUEENSBURY Judy A. Shafer, 73, passed away on Sunday, November 25, 2012 at Glens Falls Hospital surrounded by her loving family, following a courageous battle with lung cancer. She was born on January 30, 1939 in Rochester, N.Y., the daughter of the late Kingsley and Irene (Felten-berger) Brownell. Judy was a graduate of Nazareth College in Rochester. She had a B.A. in history and took 30 hours of graduate studies at the University of Rochester, William Smith College, and SUNY Albany. During her time at SUNY, she became a fan of Jeopardy and was chosen as a contestant in the spring of 1967. As a social studies teacher, Judy taught 8th grade at Clifton Springs Central School and at Albany High School. Judy loved sports especially golf and tennis, winning several trophies. Gardening was another favorite past time. She was a long time member of the Bethlehem Garden Club. She spent many years volunteering for the school in Bethlehem where her children were students. Judy was a communicant of St. Thomas Church in Delmar and Sacred Heart Church in Lake George. For a time she was a Eucharistic Minister. Judy was also very fond of reading. One of her favorite past times was traveling with her husband, John in the US, Canada, and Europe, especially in France. She was particularly fond of Sanibel Island, Fla. Besides her parents, Judy is predeceased by her sister, Pam Streich; brother, Peter Brownell; and dear friends, Marie and Merri. Survivors include her much loved husband, John; son, John and wife Rachael; grandsons, John-Hayden and Julien; daughter, Amy; brother-in-law, Walter and wife Dorothy; sister, Martha and husband Mark; brother, Matt and wife, Lisa; niece, Bridget and husband Doug; nephew, Britt; and several other nieces and nephews. She adored her extended family. Judy wanted to thank her good friends and neighbors for their kindness during her illness. A memorial service will be conducted at Sacred Heart Church in Lake George on December 15 at 11 a.m. with refreshments at the Parish Center following. In lieu of flowers, donations in Judy's name may be made to Sacred Heart Church, 51 Mohican St., Lake George, NY 12845, North Country Ministry, P.O. Box 111, North Creek, NY 12853 or the C.R. Wood Cancer Center, 100 Park St., Glens Falls, NY 12801. Arrangements are under the care of Regan Denny Stafford Funeral Home, Queensbury.
