Michael Carey Obituary

Carey, Michael P. LOUDONVILLE Michael "Mike" Patrick Carey, 69, of Loudonville peacefully passed away on Tuesday, July 11, 2017, surrounded by family at Albany Medical Center, due to complications from A.L.S. Born in Albany on July 15, 1947, he was the son of William Joseph Carey and Rosemary Travison Carey. A graduate of the Christian Brothers Academy, Michael played football and was voted a member of the All-Albany team in 1965. He continued to play at Manhattan College, where he earned his teaching degree. Mike began his career as an elementary school physical education teacher, and also coached football at Philip Schuyler High School. He later earned a master's degree in health education from Russell Sage College. Mike served many years in the Albany School District, first as a teacher and football coach, then as the director of transportation, and finally as the long-time principal of School 20 in North Albany, now known as North Albany Academy. Following retirement in 2003, he returned to football coaching at C.B.A. He also spent many years coaching softball in the West Albany little league. In addition to his love of sports, Mike was a long-time supporter of the American Legion in Albany as a "Sons of" member, and a member of the Albany Elks Lodge #49, the North Albany Limericks, the Ancient Order of the Hibernians, and the Albany Polish-American Citizens Club. An avid follower of politics, he offered his time in the community as an election inspector. After suffering a paralyzing fall in 2009, Mike made a full recovery and was inspired to volunteer at Albany Medical Center. His duties included being a "friendly visitor," especially to patients dealing with spinal cord injuries. He was proud to be honored with the "Volunteer of the Month" award at Albany Med. He was training for the Pastoral Care program through St. Pius X when he fell ill. Mike is survived by his wife of 44 years, Patricia Carey of Loudonville; his son, Matthew Carey of Albany; his daughter, Colleen Luther (Kyle) of Loudonville; his daughter, Megan Geltman (Randy) of San Antonio, Texas; his adoring granddaughters, Ennea and Aliera Luther; his younger siblings, Kathleen Henkel (Hank), Robert Carey (Diane), Maryann Ryan (Kevin), and Nancy Chamberlain; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was predeceased by his parents and brother-in law, William Chamberlain. The family would like extend thanks to those who helped Mike during his struggle with A.L.S., especially Mike Brady, Robert Carey, Nancy Chamberlain, Donna Coonley-Hotaling, Frank Owens, Tom Quinlivan, Jimmy Smith, Jerry Spicer, and Rosemary Wolfgang, as well as the doctors, staff and volunteers at Albany Med and the St. Peter's Regional ALS Center. Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Michael's family, Friday, July 14, from 4 to 7 p.m. at St. Pius X Church, Loudonville. Funeral services, Saturday, July 15, at 9:30 a.m. at St. Pius X Church, Loudonville where his funeral Mass will be celebrated. The Rite of Committal will be held in St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands immediately following the funeral Mass. In lieu of flowers, Michael requested that any memorial contributions be made to the St. Peter's Regional ALS Center, 19 Warehouse Row, Albany NY 12205 or the North Albany Academy, 570 North Pearl St., Albany NY 12204. My deepest sympathies to the Carey family. Mike will surely be missed by all he came in contact with and I personally. Coach Cary was one of my most positive mentors as he and a great team of coaches ( Alex Sokaris, Mr Scambaluri, Mr McElroy, Mr Grimes, Mr Leigh and others) helped a group of inner Albany kids become class A champs. The lessons Coach Cary taught me during those hot summer days practicing at Beaverwick Park in the Summer of 75-76 are ingrained in me. He helped me believe in myself as he did with the whole team and the results were a champion team and for me lessons that help me stay a champion in life. Thank you Coach Carey we will miss you. It was an honor to have been lucky enough to know you. Larry Amanatides

I know Mike from the School system. I especially remember when I had knee surgery two years ago at Albany Med, and who was doing volunteer work, but Mike. What a joy to see him and listen to his story as why he was there. He even called Jack Canty and told him to get over to see me!!My husband also went to North Adams for night classes with Mike in the good old days!Rest in Peace Mike. the system isn't the same!!

The Manhattan College alumni community shares the grief, and is now praying for our fellow alumni and the family at this time. The Alumni Office has been informed. As well as the Jasper Jottings community that I personally can reach. We are all a little poorer now. "No man is an island, entire of itself ... any mans death diminishes me". We are sorry for your loss.

I knew Mike briefly at Albany Schools, but I remember him most for coming with Mrs. Carey to select two little mixed pups from our lab mutt's large, well-loved and cared for litter. They (the Careys, not the dogs) were so cute! I'm sorry for your loss.

I am sorry to hear of Mr. Carey's passing. He was a great guy, my daughter's principal at School 20 for her entire elementary grades. If you ever had a problem in school with any of the students you could count on him to take care of it right away. At the end of the school day he was always outside making sure the kids were getting on their way without any fights and if there was a fight you could bet he would walk that child home safely. When my brother was in Albany Med for (cancer)surgery he was at the desk and remembered me and my daughter from school and still had a smile on his face greeting people. May he rest in peace and prayers for his wife and children.
