Wood, Robert J. "Jimmy" GLENDALE, Ariz. Robert James "Jimmy" Wood, 65, of Glendale and formerly of Altamont, passed away on Sunday, November 17, 2013. Jimmy was born in Albany, the eldest child of the late Robert Earl and Theresa (Grady) Wood. He was the greatest big brother he could be, to Barbara Ryan of Altamont, Janet (Stephen) Price of Glendale, Rick Wood of Albany, Peggy (Rich) Blais of Scotia and Bill Wood of Albany. He taught us to be strong, to stick together and be there for one another. Jimmy knew the challenges we faced and accepted us for who we were. He was not only our big brother, he was our rock. He was a devoted father to Joshua James Wood of Fall River, Mass. and Ashley Evelyn (Jon) Perreault of Troy; cherished grandfather of Jonathan and Katelyn Perreault and Arianna Wood (mother, Tina Knight). He also leaves behind nieces and nephews as well as aunts, uncles and numerous cousins, each with special memories of time spent with Jimmy. Jimmy graduated from Cathedral Academy, and Albany High School. He attended Hudson Valley Community College, graduating in 1968 with a degree in mechanical engineering. After graduation, he joined the Army and became a military police officer, Company B, 716th Military Police Battalion stationed in metropolitan Saigon, Cholon, and Tan Son Nhut, Vietnam. He volunteered to stay an extra two months to assist in the training and orientation of newly assigned MPs to the dangers they would face. He was a member of the Upstate New York Operating Engineers Local 158, District 106. After a few years, Jimmy developed wanderlust and with a group of friends set off to explore the United States. He ended up visiting 46 of the lower 48 and had numerous adventures along the way. He enjoyed wilderness hiking and camping. On his return, he worked at the Karner Road Post Office as a mail handler for 17 years. He received numerous awards during his employment. He had a group of friends there that had the same initials, they were the "RJs" and used to meet after work for coffee. As a result of a severe fall in 2002, he suffered a traumatic brain injury. He was blessed to be cared for at home by family, spending summers in New York and winters in Arizona. A graveside service with full military honors will be held at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Road Schuylerville on Thursday, December 12, 2013 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Jimmy's memory to American Service Animal Society (ASAS) at dogs4vets.org. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Heritage Funeral Chapel, Peoria, Ariz.
