Niles, Sr. Joyce, RSM ALBANY Sister Joyce Niles, RSM (Sister Mary Fidelis) died Friday, March 14, 2014, in St. Peter's Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Albany. She had been a Sister of Mercy for 68 years. Born in Albany, she was the daughter of the late Leslie and Margaret F. Joyce Niles. Sister Joyce earned her bachelor's degree from the College of St. Rose, Albany, and master's degrees from Siena College and Syracuse University. She ministered as a teacher at Vincentian, Albany; St. Mary's, Oneonta; St. Patrick's, Ravena; St. Paul the Apostle, Troy; and Sacred Heart of Mary, Watervliet, and as principal at Annunciation, Ilion, and St. Joseph's, Rensselaer. Sister Joyce was especially fond of the young children to whom she ministered as a teacher in the primary grades and easily developed wonderful rapport with them. She had a knack for making people feel wanted and appreciated and was particularly drawn to those who were downtrodden. Her compassionate attention brought out the best in people. It was difficult to escape her broad smile and that twinkle in her eye. Even when Sister Joyce was limited by her wheelchair, her disposition remained pleasant and cheerful. She always managed to keep up on what was going on in the community and in the parish as well. Her devotion to Our Lady found expression through her work at Family Rosary, a ministry dear to her heart. Anyone who asked Sister to pray for their intentions knew they could count on her to be faithful to her promise to do so. It was no secret that Sister Joyce was proud of her Irish heritage and treasured her trips to Ireland. In addition to her parents, Sister Joyce was predeceased by her sister, Veronica Wells. She is survived by her brother, Harold Niles, of Columbus, Ohio; many nieces, nephews and great-nieces as well as by her religious community, the Sisters of Mercy. Viewing hours will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 18, in the Chapel of the Convent of Mercy, 634 New Scotland Avenue, Albany. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Prayer Service of Remembrance in the Chapel at 7 p.m. The Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 19, in the Chapel. Interment will follow in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, East Greenbush. The Sisters of Mercy are grateful to the staff of St. Peter's Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for the tenderness with which they cared for our Sister. Contributions may be made in Sister Joyce's name to the Sisters of Mercy, 310 South Manning Boulevard, Albany, NY 12208. Condolence page at
