O'Connor, Patrick Joseph Jr. SCHENECTADY Patrick Joseph "PJ" O'Connor, Jr. died peacefully and with dignity at home on Monday, July 14, 2014. PJ was born in Schenectady to the late Patrick J. and Mary Kelly O'Connor and was a lifelong city resident. PJ was a 1950 graduate of the former St. Columba's High School and was a Navy veteran, serving in the Korean War. PJ became a firefighter for the city of Schenectady on September 3, 1956, retiring, after 35 years of service, as a lieutenant on November 18, 1991. He was a former vice president of the Schenectady Permanent Firefighters Association and a member of the Schenectady Firefighters Retired Association, IAFF 28, former president, board member for over 30 years and lifetime member of the Schenectady Veterans Club. He also belonged to the Knights of St. John and was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church in Schenectady. Mr. O'Connor was predeceased by his wife, Bernadette M. Hickey O'Connor who died in 2004; three siblings, Thomas P. O'Connor, Evelyn M. Dunn and John L. O'Connor. He is survived by three children, Christopher (Diana) O'Connor of Mission Viejo, Calif., Karen (James) Quinn of Clifton Park and Kyle (Susan) O'Connor of Schenectady; one brother Daniel R. O'Connor of Rotterdam; five grandchildren, Kelly Ann Quinn, Sean, Sarah, Hannah and Luke O'Connor. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. PJ lived his life for his family and friends. He touched the lives of all who knew him with his kindness and generosity. He will be greatly missed. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral which will begin Saturday, July 19, 2014 at 8:45 a.m. at the Gleason Funeral Home, 730 Union Street and at 9:30 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church, State Street, where the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Calling hours will be Friday from 4 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Members of the Knights of St. John will meet at the funeral home Friday at 6 p.m. to conduct a service. Active and retired members of the Schenectady Fire Department will meet at the funeral home Friday at 7:30 p.m. to conduct a service. Burial with military honors will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Schenectady. Memorial contributions may be made to Care Choices at the Visiting Nurses for Schenectady and Saratoga, 108 Erie Blvd., Schenectady, NY 12305 or to the Schenectady Veterans Club, 718 Union St., Schenectady, NY 12305. PJ's family wishes to thank the Visiting Nurses Association for the kind and compassionate care they provided, especially, Marcia Miller and Louise DeLuke.
