Christiana, Sr. Mary Benedict, PBVM WATERVLIET Sr. Mary Benedict Christiana, PBVM, 95, entered into life eternal on Friday, July 18, 2014 at St. Colman's Presentation Convent in Watervliet in the presence of her Lord and in the company of her beloved community. Born in Ravena, Sr. Mary Benedict was a daughter of Ceasar and Theresa (Angelini) Christiana. She was educated at St. Patrick's School in Ravena, attended high school in Troy and later graduated from the New York State Normal School in Albany (NYS College for Teachers). Sr. Mary Benedict entered the religious order of the Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary on June 4, 1948 and was received into the order on December 6, 1948. Her first profession of vows was on December 18, 1950 and her final vows were professed on December 19, 1953. In religious life, Sr. Mary Benedict enjoyed serving as a kindergarten teacher and did so in all of the schools administered to by her religious order. Her last assignment was at Sacred Heart School in North Albany and it was from there that she retired to the Motherhouse in Watervliet. In the years following, Sr. Mary Benedict served in many roles at St. Colman's but especially enjoyed overseeing the care of the clothing for the resident boys at St. Colman's Home. She was an avid and very knowledgeable NY Yankees fan. The last surviving of her siblings, Sr. Mary Benedict was sister to the late Conchetta Diacetis, Madeline Guido, Nickelina Downey, Anthony, Patrick Sr. and Benedict G. Christiana and aunt to the late Reverend Anthony C. Diacetis. She is survived by many loving nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews and her beloved religious community. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Sr. Mary Benedict on Wednesday, July 23, 2014 at 10 a.m. in St. Colman's Chapel, Watervliet. Interment will follow in St. Colman's Cemetery. Religious, relatives and friends are invited to attend and may also call at St. Colman's Chapel on Tuesday from 5 until 7 p.m.
