Abaire, H. Paul RENSSELAER H. Paul Abaire, 81, entered eternal bliss, peacefully and surrounded by his loving family on July 8, 2014. Born in Berlin on September 4, 1932 to Israel J. and Elizabeth D. Abaire and four dotting older sisters. Paul was raised in Albany, and joined the National Guard in 1949. Upon graduating from Philip Schuyler he transferred from the National Guard to the Air Force, 1951 to 1955, earning the National Defense Service Medal. While stationed in Highlands, N.J., with the 646 AC and W Squadron, he attended a dance and met the love of his life, Ms. Elizabeth Lorraine (Loree) Alward from Bedford, N.J., who was training at Highlands Hospital to be a registered nurse. They were married on March 13, 1954. They were married for 54 years and had five children. They remained together until her passing in 2007, and are together again now with their son Christopher Allen, who passed in 2003. Upon leaving the military to be with his family, Paul was encouraged by his sister Rita and her husband Marchand to join them in the restaurant business. He found he liked the business and owned and operated many restaurants over the next 40-plus years from Albany to East Greenbush, Schodack and Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. He made many lifetime friends in those restaurants and some even followed in his footsteps into their own successful places. Paul loved and rescued many animals of all types, enjoyed gardening like his father, and making tables, lamps, crucifixes and creatures out of driftwood. Paul unconditionally loved his wife, children, grandchildren and "adopted" family members. Even in the last months of his life he was gently and lovingly trying to influence decisions and help heal past hurts with those he loved, still putting all others first even if it meant discomfort to himself. He was and still is our hero, a friend, a calming and loving influence and an encouraging father to all his children and others. Paul was always selfless and humble like his parents and sisters and never understood his own worth. He was gentle and kind to the end. Paul is survived by his remaining four children, Paul, Douglas, George and Katherine Abaire; many grand and great-grandchildren; his sister, Mrs. Shirley Lever; many nieces and nephews; Mike and Laura Kearbey, whom he loved as his own; and his close friend Harry Divito. In addition to his parents, wife and son, he was also predeceased by, and now happily joined with, his sisters and brothers-in-law, Rita (Marsh) Bernardo, Anita (Ralph) Gambino and Margaret (Howard) VanSlyke. I would like to thank the Stratton V.A. Medical Center for the care Dad received over the years, especially the entire "Red Team" under Faith Herrington. Dad and I love you all. Also many thanks to Dr. Herbert Scherzer, who always went above and beyond what we could have hoped for; Mrs. Nancy Nelson from the Palliative care team, for without her guidance and advocacy for Paul and Katherine, the last several months would and have been much harder; the Hero's Way Hospice team, who are too many to mention; Fr. Joseph A. Grasso, who has been visiting and providing pastoral care to Dad, Shirley and Katherine for many years, we love and thank you. A special thank you to Hospice's Dr. Julie Phillips who is the most competent, dedicated, compassionate, and professional doctor I have ever met, I will never forget the love with which you cared for all of us. May God continue to bless you. There will be a Christian funeral Mass on Monday, August 4, 2014, at 4 p.m., at the Church of St. Mary at Clinton Heights, 163 Columbia Tpke., Rensselaer. Please join us to celebrate Paul's life here and in eternity immediately following at the Skyline Diner, 314 Columbia Tpke., from 5 to 7 p.m. Those wishing to make memorial contributions in Paul's honor may do so online to either the or the Condolence page at
