Gander, Edward W. ALBANY Edward W. Gander, 97, died on Tuesday, August 12, 2014 at St. Peter's Hospital. Born in Albany in l917, he was the son of the late Casper G. and Caroline Albert Gander of Albany. Edward graduated from Christian Brothers Academy, class of 1936 and received a degree in architecture from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1940 and was awarded a graduate fellowship. Mr. Gander was employed with the U.S. Engineers. He was in the U.S. Army for three years serving the 603rd Camouflage Engineers Special Battalion during World War II. He was employed by Gander, Gander, and Gander Architects after the War. He joined Toole and Angerame and then the New York State Department of Architecture and the Department of Social Services then with the N.Y.S. Department of Health as a senior architect. He retired in 1969. Ed was an avid golfer and watercolor artist. Mr. Gander was a past commander of the Edward F. Sullivan Post Catholic War Veterans, past member of the Eastern Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, St. Catherine of Siena Golf League and past board member of the University Club. He was a communicant of St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church. He was a resident of Beverwyck Retirement Center. Edward was the husband of the late Rita A. Eckert Gander; father of daughters, Mary E. (Arthur) Portanova of Little Rock, Ark., Suzanne (Michael) Zaccardo of Cary, N.C.., and Virginia (Andrew) Cunningham of San Diego, Calif.; sons, Thomas (Judy) of Wappinger Falls, Gerard (Marlene) of Ashland, Ore., and James (Denise) of Hartford, Conn..; brother of the late Joseph (Rita) Gander of Albany. He is survived by grandchildren, Natalie and Kristen Portanova, George and Craig Gander, Maureen Deegan, Stefanie Fratteroli, Kaylee Dickens, Shay, Sam, Jessica and Danielle Gander, Victor Zaccardo and Kathryn Reintgen, Elizabeth, Katherine, and Jennifer Cunningham and several great-grandchildren. Funeral services Saturday, August 16, 2014 at 8:15 a.m. from McVeigh Funeral Home, 208 North Allen St., Albany thence to Mater Christi Parish at 9 a.m. where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Relatives and friends are invited and may call on Friday, August 15, 2014 from 4 to 7 p.m. in the funeral home. Interment St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands.
