O'Neal, Thurman RENSSELAER Thurman C. O'Neal, 81, died peacefully Saturday, August 23, 2014 after a brief illness at Riverside Nursing Home. Born in Saganaw, Mich., he was the son of the late Julius and Josephine (Brickel) O'Neal. Predeceased by a sister, Carol Peterson. Thurman attended the Albany School System and HVCC. He was a veteran of the Navy, serving on the submarine Odax. He was employed by the Times Union for 42 years, retiring in 1995 as the superintendent of the engraving department. Thurman enjoyed spending time with his wife Phyllis at their camp in Port Henry and, later, in Dresden, N.Y. Thurman was an avid hunter and ice fisherman, spending as much time on Lake Champlain as possible. Survived by his wife of 52 years, Phyllis A. (Tilley) O'Neal; a daughter, Nancy (Phillip) Langenbach; three sons, David, Gary and Michael O'Neal; and a stepson, Lawrence (Linda) Freeman. He is also survived by his two nephews, Roger (Karen) Peterson and Mark (Naomi) Peterson; several grandchildren including, Kristin (Paolo) Martins, Kimberly (Victor Moss) Freeman, Abby (fiance Todd Schworm) Rogers, Jaimee (Damon Moquin) Rogers, and a very special great-grandson, Roman Moquin. Services will be private at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in the New Rural Cemetery.
