Montague, Howard P. PHILMONT Howard P. Montague, 84, of Philmont, died Friday, June 25, 2010 at Albany Medical Center with his loving family at his side. He was born on March 27, 1926 in Hudson, the son of William and Loletia (Huddle-ston) Montague. On September 25, 1945, he married his beloved Verna Boyles, whom he cherished. Together they raised seven children. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Jesse Rutherford in the Pacific. Following his service in the Navy, he returned to Philmont and worked in mills before his family formed Montague Coal and Oil Co. He was president of the company until his retirement in 1989. He also owned and operated Howard P. Montague Inc., a school bus company, for many years. Mr. Montague was very active in his community. He was a life member of the Mellenville Volunteer Fire Department and served as fire commissioner for the Mellenville Fire District and a member of the Minkler-Seery American Legion, where he was a post commander. He served on the Ockawamick school board and was one of the first board members for the founding of the Ockawamic School District. He was very active in the Philmont Rotary Club, where he served as president and assistant to the district governor of Rotary District 7210. He was a two-time Paul Harris Fellow. He was recently awarded an honorary membership for his years of service. Mr. Montague was elected as assesor for the town of Claverack for several terms. He served as a little league umpire. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and enjoyed traveling with Verna to visit his children. He was a lifelong Yankee fan. He was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church, Stuyvesant Falls. Surviving are his beloved wife of 65 years; seven children, Carol Ann (Jack) Armstrong of Elizaville, Bill (Judy) Montague of Waterford, Linda Traphagen of Buffalo Grove, Ill., Paula (Robert) Currie of Homer, Phyllis (Steve) Harris of Eaton, Richard (Kristy) Montague of Fairfax, Va. and Howard (Sarah) Montague of Philmont; 17 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Pat Moseley of Mellenville. He was predeceased by his brothers, Ronald and John. Calling hours will be Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at McDonald-Valenti-Richards Funeral Home, 700 Town Hall Drive, Hudson NY 12534. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Wednesday 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church in Stuyvesant Falls with Fr. Frank O'Connor officiating. Burial, with military honors, will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Philmont. Memorial contributions may be made to the Philmont Rescue Squad.
