Backlund, Nils P. NEW BALTIMORE Nils P. Backlund, 77, dreamer, achiever, visionary - an inspiration to his family, friends and acquaintances. A man who touched people with a smile, a handshake, a look - who left a lasting impression and made us all feel special and loved. A man who didn't merely travel the road of life - a man who knew how to live every moment of it - and took the rest of us along for the journey, passed away, Tuesday, July 19, 2011. Nils was a Navy veteran, serving during the Korean War. He owned and operated Village Dodge in Hudson since 1972. Nils was the supervisor for the Town of New Baltimore for ten years, a member of the Greene County Legislature for ten years, a lifetime member of the Cornell Hook and Ladder Co., a member of the New Baltimore American Legion, and an active and lifetime member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Ravena. Survivors include his wife Dorothea J. Backlund of New Baltimore; children, Peter (Debbie) Backlund of Athens and Stacey (Mark) Gallagher of New Baltimore; siblings, Thelma VanDerZee, Greta Backlund and Robert, Richard and Alan Backlund; grandchildren, Peter, Matthew and Kristin Backlund and Jason and Meghan Gallagher; and great-granddaughter Sophia Banks. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Friday, July 22, 2011 at the Grace United Methodist Church, Ravena. Burial will follow in Chestnut Lawn Cemetery, New Baltimore. Friends may call at the Babcock Funeral Home, Ravena on Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. Contributions in memory of Nils may be made to the Grace United Methodist Church, 16 Hillcrest Drive, Ravena, NY 12143.
