Pynadath, Dr. Varghese Devassy JOHNSTOWN Dr. Varghese Devassy Pynadath, age 76, of Johnstown, passed away on Monday, February 25, 2013 at Albany Medical Center. Varghese was born on October 26, 1936 in Kerala, India, a son of the late Devassy Pynadath and Elizabeth (Nalkara) Pynadath. He attended Fordham University where he earned an M.S. and went on to the University of Sarasota to earn a Ph.D. In 1967, he joined the faculty of Fulton-Montgomery Community College (FMCC) as an instructor in the sciences and later became a full professor in engineering science. In 1979, Varghese was given the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching. From 1985-1996, he served as the college's dean of arts and sciences. He was a member of the American Association of Physics Teachers, the Capital District Malayalee Association in Albany, the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, and served two terms as president of the Literacy Volunteers of America of Fulton County. Varghese is survived by his wife, Rosy (Vadakkethala) Pynadath, whom he married on August 21, 1968; two sons, David Pynadath of Los Angeles, Calif. and Joseph (Jacqueline) Pynadath of Los Altos, Calif.; one daughter, Elizabeth Serena (Robert) Bentley of Clinton, N.Y.; one brother, Joseph (Mary) Pynadath of Kerala, India; and four grandchildren, Joshua Pynadath, Jason Pynadath, Eliana Rose Bentley and Aliyah Marie Bentley. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12 p.m. (noon) on Friday, March 1 at the Holy Trinity Church, 207 Glebe St., Johnstown. Visitation for family and friends will be on today from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Barter & Donnan Funeral Home, 1 N. Melcher St., Johnstown. Spring burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Johnstown.
