Engel, Rev. Fr. Paul Francis ALTAMONT The Rev. Fr. Paul Francis Engel, 82, of Raymond Dr., Altamont, passed away peacefully Tuesday, April 9, 2013 at the Teresian House in Albany where he had been cared for since February of this year. Born April 23, 1930 in Troy, he was a son of Francis Joseph Engel and Cecilia Katherine (Murphy) Engel. Paul graduated from the former Vincentian Institute in Albany in 1947 and later, The Seminary at St. Andrew's, Rochester; St. Joseph's, Yonkers; graduate school at Siena College in Loudonville; and Newman Chaplain's School at University of Colorado. Fr. Paul served at St. Francis de Sales, Troy; St. Brigid's, Watervliet; Catholic Central, Troy; Little Sisters of the Poor, Troy; Our Lady of Victory, Troy; Hudson Valley Community College, Troy; LaSalle Institute, Troy; Newman Apostolate, Blessed Sacrament, Albany; Marion Lodge, St. Joseph's Seminary, Yonkers; director, Diocesan Permanent Deacon Program and Camp Program; the former St. Catherine's, Middleburgh; and St. Joseph's, Schoharie; dean of Schoharie County; and upon his retirement, continued to serve in St. Lucy's in Altamont; St. Bernadette's in Berne; and Our Lady of Fatima, Delanson. Fr. Paul enjoyed his walks, hiking, snowshoeing, canoeing and simply being outdoors enjoying the gifts of God's creation. He was an avid reader, planned and provided nature retreats at Pyramid Life Center, and led scripture groups for many years. He was predeceased by his parents; a brother, William; a niece, Christina Mary "Tina" Weinman; and a nephew, Stephen Weinman. He is survived by one sister, Mary Anne (Robert L.) Weinman, of Albany; nieces and nephews, Robert L. Weinman III, Terry Weinman, Carolyn "Lynn" Mele, William Paul Weinman, Bernard Weinman, Gregory J. Weinman, and grandnieces and nephews. Fr. William Gorman will receive the body at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 14 at Our Lady of Fatima R.C. Church, 1735 Alexander Road, Delanson with visitation until 4 p.m. followed by a prayer service at 4 p.m. with Fr. Paul Smith. A reception of the body will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, April 15 at Blessed Sacrament R.C. Church, 607 Central Ave., Albany, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. with Bishop Howard J. Hubbard, principal celebrant. A reception will follow the Mass and interment will be private at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Catholic Charities, 40 N.
