Orton, Barbara J. CLIFTON PARK Barbara J. Orton, 66, of Clifton Park, died at Schuyler Ridge Nursing Home on Friday, August 23, 2013, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was surrounded by her loving husband, John, and sisters, Dottie and Debbie. Barbara was born on October 3, 1946 at Ellis Hospital, the daughter of the late Robert and Dorothy Denham of Scotia. She graduated from Scotia Glenville High School and loved the Choralaires and music her entire life. She attended Syracuse University, and then graduated from Mildred Elley Secretarial School and worked at GE Gas Turbine in Schenectady. In 1968, she married her high school sweetheart John S. Orton. They celebrated their 45th anniversary and their 50th high school reunion this summer. Barbara was active in the Shenendehowa United Methodist Church, and sang with her husband in the choir for more than 30 years. She treasured her membership in the Thursday Musical Club, especially the recent 100th anniversary season. A devoted mother, Girl Scout leader, and Care Links volunteer, she enjoyed crossword puzzles, soap operas, choral music, travel, and family gatherings. She was an attentive grandmother who loved nothing more than holding her grandchildren, singing to them, and reading them books. When both her children had headed off to elementary school, she tried a 'part-time' job as a bus driver with Shen schools. Twenty years later she retired, with lots of close friends and some crazy stories! Her most treasured times were at Galway Lake. She spent her summers in Rubacks Grove her entire life, and now her children and their families return each summer for fun in that special community. She especially loved the many and varied sunsets over the lake, claiming each one was better than the last. Barbara is survived by John and two children, Jennifer L. Loftus (Josh) of San Jose, Calif., and David G. Orton (Nichole) of Ann Arbor, Mich.; and grandchildren, Leah, Casey, and Luca Loftus and Jack Orton. She is also survived by sisters, Dorothy Denham of Ballston Spa and Deborah Cragnolin (Daniel) of Southfield, Mich., extended family, and many dear friends. A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon, November 24, 2013, at Shenendehowa Methodist. Memorial contributions may be made to Care Links of Southern Saratoga County or to the Shenendehowa United Methodist Church in memory of Barbara J. Orton. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted by the family to the Gordon C. Emerick Funeral Home, 1550 Route 9, Clifton Park.
