Gerlach van Gendt Obituary

van Gendt, Gerlach Jan "Gary" DELMAR Gerlach "Gary" Jan van Gendt died on April 21, 2015, at Albany Medical Center at the age of 73. Gary devoted his life to raising and nurturing his two daughters after the death of his beloved wife, Michelle, in 1983. He was proud of his daughters. Nicole is an attorney with the New York City Housing Authority, and Johanna teaches English as a Second Language at Hudson County Community College in New Jersey. Gary graduated from Union College with a B.S. in mathematics in 1963. Later, he completed a master's in education from Yale University followed by many advanced courses in mathematics and statistics at SUNY Albany. Gary used his mathematical talents and training in his work as a statistician at the New York State Education department. He enjoyed this work and dedicated his career of more than 40 years to assessing adult education programs in New York State. Gary is the elder of two sons born to the late Gerlach Jan van Gendt and Louke de Wilde. Gary is survived by his brother, Paul; sister-in-law Margie; and nephews, Tristan and Chad. The youngest van Gendt is Gary's grandnephew, Lucas. Over the years, Gary also became very close to his wife's brothers, Frank, James, Lawrence and Paul Boylan and their wives and children. They have shared many holidays and warm memories over the last several decades. Gary was fluent in Dutch and proud of his Dutch heritage. Relatives and friends may visit Saturday, April 25, 2015, from 11-12 p.m. prior to the remembrance ceremony at 12 p.m. from the Wm. J. Rockefeller Funeral Home, 165 Columbia Tpk, Rensselaer. Nicole, I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. I remember the many times I spent at your house growing up. Your father was a great man and showed is love to you and your sister. You both are in my prayers.

Nicole and family, my deepest sympathy to you and your family on the loss of your Dad. I had the pleasure of hanging out at your house after school when we were younger and what a kind, caring man he always was to us girls.

Although I only worked with Gary for a short time at the Education Department, he was always pleasant and never hesitated to say hello to someone. He will be greatly missed by many. My thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time.
