RAY Clifton Delano Ray, 96, passed away Friday, July 5, 2013 at Jacksonville, Florida. He was born May 17, 1917 in Clay County, Tennessee. He was the son of the late Bascom and Della Ray. He was preceded in death by his wife, Agnes T. Ray; a son, David C. Ray; brothers, James, John, Douglas, Bascom, Roy and Paul Ray; and his sister, Clio Jenkins. Mr. Ray is survived by three children, James Ray of Summerville, SC, Charles Ray of Pensacola, FL and Sandra Watkins of Jacksonville, FL; four grandchildren, Eilene Gallo and Andrew, Amanda and Josh Ray; and six great grandchildren, Hannah Ray, Samantha Gregor, Mia Gallo, Ethan Gregor, Jameson Ray and Juliana Gallo and one sister, Cleo Johnson. During the 1930 s he served in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and remained an active life member of the CCC s; also, during World War II, he served in the Army Air Corps in the European Theater as an aircraft engine mechanic in the Ninth Air Force. He married his high school sweetheart, Agnes Taylor, on February 23, 1944 while both were stationed in High Wycombe, England. He graduated from Middle Tennessee State College with a Master of Science degree in Industrial Arts and had a 40 year career as a school teacher, retiring in Jacksonville, FL. Clifton had been an active member of Terry Parker Baptist Church in Jacksonville since 1964 and routinely assisted people less fortunate than himself. He was also a life member of the American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans. Memorial services will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, July 7 in the Chapel of Corey-Kerlin Funeral Home, 940 Cesery Boulevard, Jacksonville. Mr. Ray will also have a Memorial service under the direction of Strode's Funeral Chapel in Gamaliel, Kentucky on Friday, July 12 with burial with military honors at the Gamaliel Cemetery.
