Daniel Joseph "Father Dan" Shashy

SHASHY Daniel Joseph "Father Dan" Shashy, 86, passed away at his home on Friday, October 15, 2010. He was a native and life-long resident of Jacksonville, born November 8, 1923 to Mary and Joseph Shashy. He was a graduate of Robert E. Lee High School, Class of 1942. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from the University of Florida in 1948 and was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity, Gamma Theta Chapter. He honorably served in the United States Navy during World War II between 1943 and 1946. He married Bernice Joanne Rizk on September 17, 1957 at St. Patrick Cathedral in New York, New York. He was sole proprietor of David Cleaners in Jacksonville's Springfield and San Marco areas. He was an active member of Christ the King Parish and was a founding and active member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society at Christ the King. Two years after his beloved wife's passing, he attended the Sacred Heart Seminary at Hales Corners, Wisconsin where he received his Masters of Divinity degree in 1990. He was ordained into the Roman Catholic priesthood in May of 1991 and served at Resurrection Parish in Jacksonville for nine years followed by five years of service at the Cathedral-Basilica in St. Augustine, Florida. He also served periodically at Christ the King Parish in Jacksonville as well as St. Benedict Parish in St. Augustine, Florida. During his priesthood he achieved the rank of 4th Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice on October 22, 1985 and 2 brothers, Edward Shashy, Roy Shashy. He is survived by his children; Monica Shashy Figueroa and her husband Mike Figueroa, Paul Shashy and his wife, Carol Palmer Shashy, Veronica Shashy Smith and her husband Scott Smith, Andrew Shashy and his wife Sharon Millard Shashy; nine grandchildren, Michael and Christen Figueroa; Stephanie, Daniel and Joshua Smith; Nicholas Shashy; Matthew, Lauren and Jacob Shashy. Father Dan was a godfather to many including family members Karen Shashy Kemp, Anita Shashy Booth, and Brian, Lauren and Brandon Kemp. A Vigil Service will be held at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, October 19, 2010 at Christ the King Catholic Church. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated by Bishop Victor Galeone, Bishop John Snyder and Father Terry Morgan on Wednesday, October 20, 2010 10:00 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery. Arrangements by Corey-Kerlin Funeral Home, 940 Cesery Blvd. He deeply appreciated the gifts of God's nature and he would spend hours connected to God through his rose gardens and enjoying the beauty of the mountains and listening to the calm of the ocean. As he saw the beauty of God in nature so did he see the beauty of God in all the people he served. The family wishes to express their gratitude to Bishop Victor Galeone, Bishop John Snyder, Monsignor Danaher, Father Terry Morgan, Father Thanh Nguyen, Thoi Bullard and a circle of caregivers, family, friends and well-wishers for their continued love, support and prayers during this time.
