COVERDELL Mr. George Henderson (Papa) Coverdell was born on October 20, 1948, to the late G. H. Humphrey and Geraldine Coverdell-Wilson. He was affectionately known as Papa to his friends and his family. Papa grew up on the North Side of Fernandina and worked in many professions, but mostly as a skilled laborer. Papa was a sharp dresser and he was known for cutting the rug every now and again (DANCING) He was educated at Peck High School, Class of 1968 and then joined the United States Marine Corps, where he served in the Vietnam War, later being honorably discharged. Papa leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Corliss F. Coverdell, two sons: John Coverdell (Claire) of Yulee, FL and Donald Coverdell (Celeste) of Landover, MD, three daughters: Tonya Robinson of Jax, FL, Annetta Evans of Arlington, TX, and La Wanda Coverdell of Jax, FL, 19 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren, one brother: Theodore Humphrey (Pearlene) of Sandersville, GA, one sister: Carrie Coleman (Carlton) of O Neil, FL, and an adopted son, Toni Starke of Jax, FL, and a host of loving nieces, nephews, and other family members and sorrowing friends. Papa also had numerous close friends, too many to name, but you know who you are, and we thank you for being his FRIEND. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters: Luddie Mae Humphrey-Smith, who passed away on April 16, 2010, Johnnie Lee Coverdell-Clinch, who passed away on May 11, 2010, and Katie Mae Coverdell-Thompson, who passed away on August 1, 2011, one brother, Harry Wilson, Jr., who passed away on April 13, 2012, one brother-in-law, Charles (Track) Clinch, who passed away on July 29, 2012, and two nieces: Cecelia Darlene Hammond-Smith, who passed away on October 4, 2011, and Kadine Thompson. His family will receive friends on Friday from 5:00 7:00 pm at the Oxley Heard Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 1:30 pm, on Saturday, April 13, 2013 at the New Zion Missionary Baptist Church of Fernandina Beach with Pastor Jeremiah Robinson, Jr., officiating and Pastor Bernard Thompson, presiding. Mr. Coverdell will be laid to rest, beside his brother, in Bosque Bello Cemetery. The repast will follow at the Martin Luther King Center in Fernandina Beach.
