Janice Ann Commons(1937 - 2013)

COMMONS Janice Ann Commons went to the Lord on December 29, 2013. She was born in San Antonio, Texas on September 7, 1937 to the late Truman and Dorothy Hatch. She was preceded in death by her younger brother, Charles. In 1950, her parents and two children moved to Corpus Christi, Texas, where Janice attended high school and Junior college prior to graduating from the University of Texas with a degree in elementary education. Following graduation, she returned to Corpus Christi to begin her teaching career. Shortly thereafter, she met Mike Commons, and following an abbreviated courtship, they were married on October 8, 1960. She then embarked on a new career as a Navy Wife. Janice and Mike spent the next ten years at numerous duty stations in California. In January 1971, they were transferred to the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. In January 1975, they moved to the Jacksonville area and took up residence in Orange Park, Florida where, following Mike s retirement from the Navy in 1980, they decided to settle down. In 1992, Janice went back to school, at what was then FCCJ, where she worked as a Supplemental Instructor, a position she enjoyed and in which she excelled. She was cited by the college president for her work in the classroom. She excelled as a tennis player and golfer and later in life she also worked as a volunteer at the Clothes Closet in Orange Park. Janice was the mother of four children, Karen Commons (Ken Watson), David Commons (Donna), Diane Commons (Gilles Fuller) and Matthew Commons (Rebecca). In addition to raising four children, keeping the home going while her husband was at sea, Janice was also a teacher, writer, artist and outstanding wife and mother. She is survived by her husband of fifty-three years, her four children and eleven grand children. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, January 7, 2014, 10:30 AM at St. Catherine s Catholic Church, 1649 Kingsley Ave., Orange Park, FL with MSGR.. Vincent Haut, Celebrant. Family and friends will visit on Monday, January 6, 2014 from 5 until 7 PM at Jacksonville Memory Gardens Funeral Home, 111 Blanding Blvd.,Orange Park, FL. Janice will be laid to rest on Wednesday, January 8, 2014, 11AM at Jacksonville National Cemetery, 4083 Lannie Rd., Jacksonville, FL. The family would like to recognize the wonderful support we received from Talena and Deborah, with Northeast Florida Community Hospice and our wonderful caregivers, Beth and Britany, from Visiting Angels.
