WEST Mr. John L. West, age 76, of Fernandina Beach, passed away on Sunday morning, August 18, 2013 at the Morris Center for Caring at Shands of Jacksonville. Born in Conway, SC, he was the oldest of four children born to the late Louis Eric and Charlotte Stacia Ellis West. Being raised in Yauhannah, SC, he attended a one room school house in Plantersville, SC. He was a graduate of Winyah High School, Class of 1955. After high school, Mr. West attended college on an Academic Scholarship at North Carolina State in Raleigh. While at NC State he earned a Bachelor s Degree in Pulp and Paper, graduating with honors. During his freshman year in college, he met Carolyn Knight whom would become his wife. Mr. West graduated in May of 1959 and he and Miss Knight were married in June. The newlyweds immediately settled in Charleston, SC as he began his career joining Westvaco Paper Company. Throughout his 40 year career in the Paper Industry, he and his family moved several times for promotions and new appointments. After living and working in SC, OH and AZ, he was brought to Stone Container in Jacksonville where he served as General Manager until retiring in 1999. While working in Coshocton, OH, he was recognized by receiving the Chairman s Award for Excellence in 1989, was on the Advisory Board of Bank One and was a Rotarian. Mr. West was a Veteran of the U.S. Army, an avid fisherman, golfer and NC State fan. He was a member of the Memorial United Methodist Church of Fernandina Beach. In addition to two sisters, he is preceded in death by a daughter, Lori Bass, who passed away in 2006. Mr. West leaves behind, his wife of 54 years, Carolyn Knight West, Fernandina Beach, FL, their son, David West (Cathy), Pooler, GA, a son in law, David Bass, Birmingham, AL, a sister, Judy Dugan (Nelson), Rocky Mt., NC, a sister in law, Becky Clegg, Raleigh, NC, four grandchildren, Lindsay Burns (Judson), Chillicothe, OH, Jessica West, Columbus, OH, Kelsey Bass, presently a student at Texas A &M, College Station, TX, Taylor Bass, Birmingham, AL, a great grandson, Jonah and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 11:00 am on Wednesday, August 21, 2013 in the Burgess Chapel of Oxley Heard with Reverend Beth Fogel Miller, officiating. Mr. West s family will receive friends from 5:00 7:00 pm on Tuesday at the funeral home.
