Kenneth Vernard Atkins

ATKINS Kenneth Vernard Atkins, M.D. physician, humanitarian, beloved husband, father, brother and friend released his earthly fetters as he departed this life on August 5, 2010 in Vero Beach, Florida. Dr. Atkins was a well -respected Obstetrician-Gynecologist who practiced medicine in Jacksonville for over 22 years. He continued his profession at the Indian River County Health Department, Vero Beach, Florida, employed as Senior Physician for the past 4 years. Dr. Akins received his early education at local schools in Duval County, graduating from New Stanton Senior High School- Class of 1969. Furthering his education he earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Howard University majoring in Chemisty-1973, graduate of University of Florida Medical School-1977, Residency graduate OB/GYN at Medical College of Ohio at Toledo-1981. He was a faithful member at Woodlawn Presbyterian Church for many years, currently under the leadership of Dr. J. W. Rigsby, Pastor. Dr. Atkins served this community in various capacities, First Coast Sun Rise, Guest Host, University of Florida Research, Volunteer Jamaican Medical Mission sponsored by the Presbytery of St. Augustine, Chief of Staff Methodist Hospital, CHPA, President North East Florida Medical Association, President of Florida Medical, Dental, Pharmaceutical Association, City of Jacksonville Victim's Service Advocate, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Gamma Beta Fraternity. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Mrs. Shirley Dixon Atkins; son, Joshua Vernard Atkins; sisters, Ms. Brenda Kemp Alston of Seattle, Washington, Mrs. Linda Kemp McClendon (Donald), Mrs. Anna Marie Atkins Toler (Oscar) of Miami, FL, Ms. Amy Atkins, of Sarasota, FL, and Ms. Sharon Atkins; brother, Brian Atkins of Tampa, FL; step-mother, Mrs. Gwendolyn Atkins of Sarasota, FL; a number of other relatives and many friends including close friends, Matt and Dr. Shelly Thompson, Dr. Charles E. Simmons, III, Dr. James and Deborah Dopson of Georgia, Dr. Laurence and Pamela Morse of Connecticut, Elliott and Rosalyn Wiley of Maryland, Cheryl and Glenn Philips of Texas and Wanda Wright. FUNERAL SERVICE will be held NOON, Thursday, August 13, 2010 at Woodlawn Presbyterian Church @ 3026 Woodlawn Rd., Jacksonville, Florida 32209, Dr. J. W. Rigsby, Pastor, officiating. Dr. Atkins will rest in the mortuary for visitation Wednesday from 5 PM until 7 PM and Thursday at the church from 10 AM until the hour of service. Entombment will be in Edgewood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers Memorial gifts may be made to the Woodlawn Presbyterian Church's General Scholarship Fund of The Jamaican Mission Medical Team.
