LONNIE SMITH

SMITH Lonnie A. Smith was carried away on the Wings of a Dove to his eternal home on Saturday, June 22, 2013. Lonnie was born on September 27, 1918 in Pierce County, Blackshear, GA. He was one of eleven children to James C. and Lydia King Smith. Mr. Smith served his country in WW II in the Army Air Corp as a gunner on a B24, Liberator. His plane was shot down off the coast of France, though critically injured he would receive a medal for trying to save the other men. He was a decorated veteran also receiving the Air Medal and the Purple Heart. Lonnie moved to Jacksonville in 1951. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Catherine Fewox Smith; his children, Rodney (Patti) Smith and Rhonda (Mike) Davis; 3 grandchildren, Kayla Smith, Jordan Davis and Matthew Smith; 2 sisters, Josie Henderson and Jeanette Walker; sister-in-law, Marie Fewox Sweat and other extended family and friends. Graveside services with Military Honors will be held 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 26, at the Bethel Cemetery in Callahan, FL with The Rev. Mark Atkinson officiating.
