Louie E. Vaughn Jr.(1923 - 2014)

VAUGHN Louie E. Vaughn, Jr., 90, passed away peacefully Wednesday, March 12, 2014 surrounded by his family. Louie was born in Spartanburg, SC April 28, 1923. He worked for Southern Railroad for 41 years, retiring in 1983, and he served bravely in the US Navy during World War II. He is preceded in death by his wife Vera Duncan Vaughn. Surviving is his son, Louie E. Vaughn III (Pat); daughter, Belva V. Ogier (Bruce); Randy Duncan (Jan), Danny Duncan (Vicki), 9 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild. He is also survived by two beloved sisters, Freddie Caldwell and Martha Westbrook. Enlisted in the US Navy, Louie served during WWII aboard the USS Bassett and was assigned to the Asian-Pacific Theater. The USS Bassett aided in the rescue of 152 survivors of the USS Indianapolis, which had been sunk in its war efforts. Louie truly was part of the greatest generation to ever live. He was a charismatic storyteller, with countless tales about being 1 of 7 brothers and sisters, his service in the Navy and the life he so enjoyed. He was a Mason and a member of Kernan Baptist Church. A viewing for family and friends will be held at Quinn-Shalz Funeral Home, Friday, March 21 from 6:00PM to 8:00PM. A military graveside service will be held at 11:00AM Saturday, March 22 at Riverside Memorial Cemetery, 7242 Normandy Blvd, Jacksonville, FL.
