Ressie Taylor(1918 - 2014)

TAYLOR Captain Ressie Taylor, 96, Jacksonville s oldest retired firefighter, passed away on Thursday, March 6, 2014 in a local hospital. Captain Taylor was born on February 8, 1918 in Taylor, Florida, played basketball and graduated from Macclenny High School. While working at Swisher Cigar Factory, Ressie met Dorothy Mae Mosley, who also worked there and they married on June 25, 1942. Ressie and his family were members of Southside Assembly of God for many years. After his service in the US Navy as an engineers mate he moved back to Jacksonville and went to work with the City of Jacksonville Electrical Department. Ressie left the city and went back to work for Swisher Cigars and soon after took a test to become a firefighter, was hired in September 1945 and retired after a total of 40 years of service. Captain Taylor was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Dorothy Mae Taylor, in 2011 and is survived by his daughter Barbara S. Taylor and a number of nieces, nephews and extended family. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, March 14, 2014 at the North Jacksonville Chapel of Peeples Family Funeral Homes, 2220 Soutel Drive near Lem Turner Road with Tommy Timmerman officiating. Entombment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery with full Firefighter Honors. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Thursday (TODAY) at the funeral home.
