Russell D. FLAGG Jr.

FLAGG Russell D. Flagg, Jr., 92, devoted husband to Rita for 69 years, father of Christopher D. Flagg and Judith Ann Hermann, passed on after a rich and rewarding life. Born in Rutland, VT, the son of a talented violinmaker, Russell spent his life as a gifted musician. He was Principal Violist for the New Orleans Philharmonic Symphony for thirty-five years prior to his retirement in 1985 where he returned to his hometown in Vermont. After ten years of redirecting his talented hands to woodworking, gardening and tending to his acreage in Vermont, they relocated to Florida. Jacksonville became their most recent home. Prior to his 1952 appointment with the New Orleans Philharmonic Symphony, Russell performed with the Philadelphia Chamber orchestra, the Bach Festival Orchestra, the Baltimore Orchestra and the Vermont Symphony Orchestra. He appeared as soloist with the New Orleans Symphony in four subscription concerts during his tenure there. His wit, charm and warm character made immediate friends. His well-rounded wisdom on numerous topics made him a grand conversationalist. His unmeasured devotion to his wife and his pride in his children were extraordinary. Russell will be returned to his home of Rutland, VT, where he will again join his beloved Father, Mother and Brother. He is survived by his wife Rita of sixty-nine years, his daughter Judith (Albert), Mandeville, LA, his son Christopher (Julie), Jacksonville, FL, his grandchildren Jeffery and Rebecca Flagg, Mark Hermann (Leigh), Kristy (Travis) five great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, and since Russell was such a military history buff and Army veteran of WWII, for his love of his son's devotion to downtown Jacksonville's revitalization efforts, he would be honored to have any donations made out to; The Jacksonville Historic Naval Ship Association and sent to The ADAMS Class Museum Visitor Center, The Jacksonville Landing, 2 Independent Drive, Suite 144, Jacksonville, Florida 32202, in his name of Russell D.
