JOHN MOORE

MOORE John H. Moore II, age 83, passed away July 19, 2013. He was born August 5, 1929 in Atlantic City, New Jersey to John Henry Moore and Gertrude Moore. He attended Syracuse University in Syracuse, New York and upon graduating in 1951 joined the United States Navy, retiring as Commander of US Naval Reserve in 1971. In the Fall of 1958, he entered the University of Florida Law School and received his juris doctorate degree in 1961. He practiced law in Atlanta, Georgia and Fort Lauderdale, Florida before being appointed to the Circuit Court of Florida in Broward County, where he presided for ten years. He served on the 4th District Court of Appeals in West Palm Beach for four years before being appointed by President Ronald Reagan to Florida s Middle District Federal Court where he became Chief Judge. He spent 28 years on the bench, after which time he remained as a senior Judge until recently. He was a member of the Florida and Federal Bar Association, the American Judicature Society, and related professional organizations. He was a life member of the Naval Reserve Association and the Navy League of the United States; the recipient of several Navy medals and ribbons, a charter member of the National World War II Memorial and Vietnam Veterans Memorial Foundation. He was a member of the University of Florida President s Council, a charter life member of University of Florida Alumni Association, and Gator Boosters, Inc. He was a former officer and Director of Timuquana Country Club, past president of the Country Club of Sapphire Valley, North Carolina, and a member of Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra, Florida. He was honored by Rotary International as a Paul Harris fellow. He was a founding member of the Two Hundred Club of Jacksonville. Judge Moore is survived by his wife of 62 years, Joan, and one daughter, Debbie, having been pre-deceased by a daughter, Katherine. Also surviving are nephews, Peter Thomas Moore of Savannah, Georgia, and Wesley John Moore of Charlotte, North Carolina and nieces, Christine Moore Christianson of Virginia Beach, Virginia and Lisa Moore Hoke of Washington, DC. A memorial service was held in his honor by his wife, friends, and residents at Cypress Village on July 29, 2013. Memorials may be made to the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida or a charity of your choice.
