EDWARD KROH Obituary

KROH Edward Richard Kroh Sr. died peacefully July 25, 2011 at his home surrounded by his family after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born Oct. 13, 1933 in Baltimore, MD to Anton and Jennie Kroh. An outstanding athlete in soccer and lacrosse at the University of Baltimore, he was a member of the All-American Lacrosse team and All Star North/South Team in 1955. Upon moving to Jacksonville, FL in 1977, Ed played with both of his sons on the infamous Roadside Armadillos Lacrosse team, capturing the Florida Lacrosse League Championship in 1981. He was a veteran on the U.S. Marine Corps and worked over 30 years for United States Lines Steamship Co. After his retirement, he worked for Smurfit Stone Corp. in international import and export. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren in the Florida Keys. Ed was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary Katherine Townsley Kroh, sister, Ruth Kroh Evans and brother, James Kroh. Survivors include his daughter, Nancy Kroh Dowell (Andy) of Severna Park, MD; sons Edward Jr. of Jacksonville and Tom (Danielle) of Thomasville, NC; sister, Marguerite Kroh Seifert; and grandchildren, Mary Caroline Dowell, Charles Andrew Dowell of Severna Park and Katherine Elizabeth Kroh and Stewart Henry Kroh of Thomasville. The family will receive friends for the visitation from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at HARDAGE-GIDDENS FUNERAL HOME, 1701 Beach Blvd., Jacksonville Beach, FL. A private family service will be held at time of burial in Ridgeley, MD. The family is most grateful for the care given by Community Hospice of Northeast Florida and St. Vincent's Oncology Group. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice, 4266 Sunbeam Rd. Memories and Condolences

Not sure what to say?

December 27, 2011

To the Kroh family: I just learned of Ed's passing and offer my sincere sympathies. As a former Armadillo, I met him through lacrosse, which, it seems, creates a special bond with everyone who plays the game. I liked Ed and enjoyed playing on his team. Admired and respected him, too. He was a great guy. I'm sadded by the news his death. -- Ray McNulty (Vero Beach, Fla.)

To the Kroh family: It was such a privilege to know your Dad. What a great guy! I remember meeting him at the Thompson reunion as a little girl, around the time he and your mother married. I followed them around all day! Sending love and missing you. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

Me and my brother Al were teammates with Ed Sr and Tom on the Roadside Armadillo's in Jacksonville while we were stationed at the Naval Air Station from 1983-1987. We have fond memories of our teammate and Ed was an inspiration to all of us in our early years with the team. Our deepest condolenses to the Kroh family from my brother and I and all of the Armadillo's.

We've lost such a character in the world, it is hard to put into words. After so many years, Big Ed went from being my parent's friend to my friend. His humor, quick wit, passion and big smile will be greatly missed. Memories of crab boils and neighborhood parties (where he and my Dad would eventually be found sleeping in chairs!) Lacrosse games and just talking at the mailbox will always be with me. How lucky I have been to have the Kroh family in my life. And how sad I am today
