ALBERT WILKINSON Obituary

WILKINSON Dr. Albert Harrison Wilkinson, Jr., 86, passed away on July 10, 2013. Dr. Wilkinson was the son of Lillian Hess Wilkinson and Dr. Albert Harrison Wilkinson, Sr. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Linda Fink Wilkinson; four children, Leslie W. Brotman (Sol), Dr. Albert (Sonny) H. Wilkinson, III (Lynn), Gary L. Wilkinson (Karen), Dr. Catherine W. Snowden (Todd) and nine grandchildren. Albert's father arrived in Jacksonville as the Superintendent of St. Luke's Infirmary. His mother's family were founding members of Congregation Ahavath Chesed- The Temple and included the Presidents of Furchgott s Department Store. Albert served in the Navy in World War II as a medical corpsman. He then attended college at Emory University before graduating from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia as a member of AOA. After post-doctoral training in New Orleans, Atlanta and Chicago, Albert was offered a faculty position at Northwestern University but declined in order to return to Jacksonville and become the first Pediatric Surgeon in Florida. He began his practice, serving all hospitals in Duval County and continuing his research. Dr. Wilkinson performed the first successful corrective surgery on a newborn with their heart outside their body. Wilkinson formed Pediatric Surgical Associates with his former resident, Dr. Warner Webb. They later merged their practice into the Nemours Children's Clinic where Albert was the Founding Medical Director. Albert helped create the first Tumor Registry in the State of Florida to track children's cancers and management. After retiring from clinical practice, Albert remained a Consultant at Nemours and wrote two books on the history of children s health care in Jacksonville. He was Executive Director of the Florida Association of Children's Hospitals for more than a decade. Even as an octogenarian, Albert could be found in the halls of the State Capitol and congressional office buildings, lobbying for improvements in children's health care. Albert served as President of Child Guidance Center and Southside Rotary, where he was named a Paul Harris Fellow. He also received a Lifetime Volunteer Award from the Florida Section of the American Cancer Society, Presidential Citation from OneJax and Honorary Membership in Leadership Jacksonville. Wilkinson was an avid surfer and runner, having competed in more than 20 River Runs. In his later years, he led the Ancient Mariners of Bill Adams, Adm. Byron Fuller and Capt. Dick Scruggs on boating adventures in the U.S. and the Bahamas. Albert was also a hiker, having climbed in the Tetons less than a year before his death. A Memorial Service will be held at Congregation Ahavath Chesed The Temple, located at 8727 San Jose Blvd. Jacksonville FL 32217 on Friday July 12, 2013 at 11am with Rabbi Joshua Lief officiating. Memorial contributions in Albert s name may be made to Wolfson Childrens Hospital and Congregation Ahavath Chesed- The Temple. I knew Dr Wilkinson when I was a child and as an adult because of a longtime friendship between my parents and he and Linda. I was even his patient twice when I needed minor surgery as a kid. Throughout the time I had the honor of knowing him he never changed, Dr Albert Wilkinson was a kind and genteel person and I'm thankful to have known him. Love to Linda and Leslie, Sonny, Gary and Catherine

An individual who was kind and caring having charm, wit and intelligence, and devoting his life to others. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Wilkinson family in this sad time.

Wilkinson Family,
From our family to yours may there be peace and the many blessings of God. Dr. Wilkinson operated on our son when he was three weeks old. Our pediatrician said he was the best surgeon in Jacksonville. That Friday he had stayed late in the office, we drove right over, he saw us right away, and did the surgery within one hour. He was so kind and we could tell that God was using him to help our son. Joshua is 31 now and never had any other problems.
We thank God for using Dr. Wilkinson for us and so many families for decades. I know you are proud of him and miss him very much.
May the Lord bless you and keep you and give you peace.

His was clearly a life well lived. A beacon of his community, a leader in his church, a much sought after physician specialist....A Rotary leader who personified the "Service above Self" motto...Jacksonville is not quite the same place without him. May he rest in peace. God bless the family.

To the Wilkinson family:

I was sadded to learn of Dr. Wilkinson's passing. I was a long-time patient of Drs. Wilkinson & Webb while growing up and remember so well his professionalism and reassuring manner for both me and my mother. I also smiled at the comment that until recently he was still visiting Congress as an advocate for children's health because that was where I last saw him years after I was his patient -- when I was an adult working in Washington on Capitol Hill. He really did love helping others and will be missed.

To Dr. Sonny Wilkinson and The Wikinson family, I worked with Dr. Wilkinson years ago in the OR at BMC as an circulating nurse even before Dr. Webb joined the practice. He has always been a great teacher and he never passed the opportunity of a teaching moment, which helped me throughout my nursing career. He has touched the lives of so many and will truly be missed. May God give you comfort and strength during your time of bereavement.

For All,
Uncle Albert had more integrity than one can describe, always compassionate and dedicated to improving so many issues related to pediatric care and many other important causes.
He helped many including our family in quite meaningful ways. The Leeds and Strauss families will miss his warm Southern greeting and genuine love immensely.

I will never forget this hero of a person! He always supported me as a young head nurse of NICU. His help and support was invaluable. Although I am sure he mentored many, he invited me to come into surgery and was always so involved in teaching and proud of his craft. He has made such an impact on the lives of children and families in this area. Dr Wilkinson had a special gift of treating all people with respect. I saw him at the funeral of a fellow pediatric nurse and I am so glad I walked outside to tell him how much I appreciated him. I work as a pediatric nurse care coordinator now, and many of the principles he taught me are still valuable in my practice. To Linda and his family,I know you are so proud of his legacy and I wish you peace and comfort.

Mrs Wilkinson and Family
I met Dr Wilkinson as a young mother when he treated both of my children at various times. He was the most kind and gentle man who had a true passion for the children and their health. I will never forget his patience and kindness. My children are now married with children of their own and I pray if and when they need a physician they will have the same great experience. I could go on and on but I would only be echoing what many lives he touched would be saying. Rest in Peace Good and Faithful servant

To Dr. Sonny Wilkinson and family. I am sadden to hear of the loss of a true and passionate surgeon. I had the pleasure of scrubbing on many of Dr. Wilkinson pediatric cases when Adults and Peds shared the operating rooms at BMC. Every case was a teachable moment and I learned how to appreciate his Art of Mending the innocent lives of kids he loved so very much and cared for. I pray his legacy will echo forever and that you each find comfort and peace during this time and for the days ahead.
