Alice Duke Obituary

DUKE Alice Gammage Duke, 82, passed away Wednesday, October 30, 2002. She was born in Tarpon Springs, Florida, to the late Drs. Edith and Albert Gammage, and attended Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia. She had lived in Jacksonville the past 55 years and was a longtime member of Englewood Christian Church. She was devoted to God, her children and her church, and enjoyed painting and gardening. She was preceded in death by one of her sisters and her three brothers and by her husband of 54 years, Joseph Zachary Duke, Jr. Survivors include five children, Joseph Zachary Duke III (Jennifer), Donna Duttera (Brad), Daisy Hepner (William), Thomas Duke (Ellan) and William Byron Duke (Kimberly), three sisters, Daisy Richards Bisz of Coral Gables, Fla., Charlotte Johnson of Clifton, Va., and Bessie MacDonnell of Miami, Fla., ten grandchildren, Heather, Joshua, Lindsey, Bradford, Lindsay, Zachary, Matthew, Jordan, Caleb and Andrew, a great-granddaughter, Kaley, and numerous nieces and nephews. The Reverend Ken Gemeinhart will lead Funeral services at 3:00 PM Friday, November 1, 2002, at Englewood Christian Church. Services will conclude at the Oaklawn Cemetery Mausoleum. The family will receive friends at the church from 2:00 PM Friday for one hour prior to the funeral. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to Englewood Christian Church to provide a Nativity Scene in her memory (4316 Barnes Road, Jax., FL 32207). My thoughts and prayers go out to the family & friends of Mrs. Duke. She was such an inspiration to me and memories of her will forever remain in my heart. May God bless each family member with unfailing strength to bear their loss.
