Bennie Vickers Obituary

VICKERS Bennie F. Vickers, born July 21, 1932 in Bannockburn, Georgia, passed from this life on June 7, 2010 at his home in Fleming Island, Florida. He was predeceased by his parents, Freddie and Rhoda Vickers and his brother Gene Vickers. Bennie was a faithful and loved member of the Lakeside Church of Christ in Orange Park, Florida since 1989 and had served faithfully in other congregations in Florida since 1964. He served 2 years in the US Army from 1956 to 1958 as a military policeman. He was employed by Gulf Oil Corporation for 25 years and retired from BP Oil as a District Manager in 1992. He was an avid Goldwing rider and a member of the Goldwing Road Riders Association. He also loved riding his bicycle almost every day of the week and enjoyed any outdoor activity. Bennie is survived by his wife of 54 years Louise Vickers (formerly Louise Shouse, daughter of Homer and Ruby Shouse), and daughter Karen Vickers Hawver and son-in-law Charles Hawver. Five sisters, Maggie Vaughn, Anne Bohanan (Alfred), Ava Ramsey (Sam), Jo Culpepper (Danny), Faye Zittrouer (Richard), brothers Julian Vickers (Betty), Wayne Vickers (Judy) and Londie Vickers, sister-in-law, as well as a multitude of other family members and dear friends. Viewing will be held at Jacksonville Memory Gardens Funeral Home, 111 Blanding Blvd. Orange Park, FL, Thursday, June 10, 2010 between 5 and 7 pm. Funeral Services will be conducted Friday, June 11, 2010 at 10 am at Lakeside Church of Christ located at 2539 Moody Avenue, Orange Park, Fla. Internment will be held at Evergreen Cemetery at 12 noon. Bennie, Husband, Father, Brother and Son was adored by many, young and old. He was a man who loved life and lived each day he was given to the utmost fullest. He had no regrets in his life, only smiles and a joke for anyone who would look his way and lend him an ear. Always positive, always upbeat, always there when someone needed a hand. He will be missed deeply, remembered forever with much respect and love. And, as he would say, Let's Ride. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Lakeside Church of Christ Sinking Fund at the above address. Please Sign the Guestbook @ Jacksonville.com

Dear Louise and Karen,

Brent and I wanted to express our love and sympathy to you. Your family has meant so much to us over the years. I will always remember Bro. Bennie's sense of humor and the jokes and good times we had while we were growing up. I will always remember and be grateful for the lovely bridal shower you gave me in Pensacola many years ago. I wish I could come to see you, but please accept my love and prayers for you during the most difficult time you will ever face. I pray that God lifts you up and gives you peace and clear memories of all the wonderful times you had with your dear Bennie.

Dear Louise & Karen,

There are no words which I can express my love for Bennie and the each of you. Bennie was a man I learned much from and leaned on probably too many times, but he was always ready to come my way when in need of help. There are so many memories we share together, World Series trip, Jaguars, mountain trips, rides on the motorcycles, they will last until I met him again in eternity. Yes he will always be remembered, not just as a friend but as a brother who I loved dearly.
May the blessing of God be with you both in the days ahead, never forget I stand ready to help you whenever and for whatever.

Love, Ron Garner

Bennie and Louise have been a major influence in my life. They welcomed me with opened arms upon becoming a new Christian and member at Lakeside Church of Christ over 8 yrs. ago. Coming into a new church can be very overwhelming and intimidating to a single woman at that time but Bennie and Louise's genuine warmth and friendliness helped me immediately become at ease in my new life. His wonderful sense of humor and loving demeanor shall be sadly missed. Bennie and Louise became dear friends to Bill and me so with Bennie's passing, he will be sadly missed in church by us, to say the least. Louise, you are in our prayers with Bennie's passing.......
