Obituary Condolences

RIVERS Joe Rivers, Jr., of Jacksonville, FL, passed away on July 5, 2013, at Baptist Hospital (Downtown). The eldest of 10 children, he was born in Macon, GA on June 11, 1920, to Joe Rivers, Sr. and Annie Bell Rivers. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 20, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. in Shiloh Metropolitan Baptist Church, Rev. H. B. Charles, Pastor. Mr. Rivers was a retired World War II Veteran, who proudly served his country in the United States Navy as a Chief Petty Officer. He was awarded the Purple Heart due to injuries he sustained during the Pearl Harbor attack in the Pacific on December 7, 1941. He also received other meritorious medals during his naval tour of duty. Following his 20 year navy career, he continued his Federal service as a civilian supervisor at the Jacksonville Naval Air Station until he retired after 32 years, resulting in 52 combined years of dedicated service to the United States of America. Most of his life he was a member of the Methodist faith, until he joined Shiloh Baptist Church in 1994, where he was baptized to the Baptist faith. He was predeceased by both parents; son, Marcus J. Rivers, 2 sisters, Inez Davis and Eula Rivers, 3 brothers, Robert, Ernest and Frank Rivers. Mr. Rivers is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, sons Joe A. Rivers (Lisa), Ivan M. Rivers, and Reginald W. Rivers, Sr. (Vanessa); 10 grandchildren, Marshall, Chivan, Reginald Jr, Marius, Ivan Jr, Nicholas, Devan, Christopher and Bryan; 6 great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Mary Cabiness and Martha White; 2 brothers, Jessie Rivers (Earnestine) and Douglas Rivers; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives. Joe had several loyal friends; Wealthie Fisher, Willie Perry, James Laster, Marvin Wilson and Sheila Scott. We are truly grateful and thankful for the excellent care that the following nurses provided during his year and a half stay at Baptist Hospital, namely; Cindy, Von, Katherine, Candy, Joan, Alfredo, Rudy, Jude and Sam. Mr. Rivers will rest in the St. Thomas Family Life Center, 2119 Rowe Avenue for visitation of friends on Friday, July 19, 2013, from 5:00p.m to 8:00p.m and in the church on Saturday from 9:30a.m. until the hour of service. Interment will be in the Jacksonville National Cemetery. Arrangements are in the trusted hands of REGINALD R.
