Obituary Condolences

ALEXANDER Joseph Jonas Alexander was born in Piedmont, Alabama on May 21, 1921. He was the seventh of eight children born to James Mack Alexander and Denie Boozer Alexander. He was preceded in death by his parents and six of his siblings: Sallie, Joseph, James, Chester, Thomas and William. He departed this life in Jacksonville, Florida early Monday morning, February 4, 2008. His numerous friends and relatives best knew Joseph as “Pete.” His step-grandchildren gave him the nickname “Big Poppa.” Joseph attended Mt. Eagle Elementary School in Piedmont, Alabama. His first teacher was his eldest sister, the late Sallie Caldwell. He graduated from Barbour County Training School in Eufaula, Alabama under the tutorship of the late, well-known professor Albert J. Taylor. He also attended other schools in the Piedmont- Jacksonville, Alabama area. He attended Stillman Institute (College) until his call to duty in the U.S. Army during World War II. He served with pride and valor, achieving the rank of Sergeant First Class. He was honorably discharged having received many commendations for his 27 years of service during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. After retiring from the Army, he worked and retired from the U.S. Postal Service. Joseph grew up in rural Alabama on his parent's farm, but he never wanted to be a farmer. He was an independent thinker, a dream seeker, a risk taker; goal oriented, and became “his own man”. He loved and enjoyed the finer things of life, in spite of his frugality. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed other sports. He loved his home and family always. He enjoyed traveling and attended yearly family reunions until his health prohibited him from doing so. Joseph married the late Evie Mildred Mizelle during his military stint near Jacksonville, Florida. To this union, one daughter, Donna Alexander Hatchette was born. In 1993, he married Carolyn H. Thompson. They met while both were members of the Woodlawn Presbyterian Church (USA). Joseph is survived by his wife Carolyn, his sister Denie Gibson of Cincinnati, Ohio, daughter Donna Alexander Hatchette of Winter Haven, Florida, stepson Karl D. Harris (Jennifer), five step-grandchildren Kayla, Korey, Karl II, Jasmyn, and Jayden of St. Augustine, mother in law Lucy Harris, sister in law Kelley Dixon (Jeff), brothers in law Jeff, Kerry (Janice), and Kevin (Shannon), two uncles Clyde Wheeler and Samuel Wheeler of Alachua, Florida, one aunt Ida Goldwire of Alachua, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and family friends. Joseph was a Master Mason with North Jacksonville Lodge No. 387 of the Free and Accepted Masons.
