Obituary Condolences

SONES Michael A. Sones went home to be with the Lord on August 7, 2013. Michael was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was raised in Orlando, Florida and attended Lake Brantley High School. It was then that Michael discovered surfing, one of his greatest passions, a passion that continued his entire life. Michael was an alumnus of the University of Florida. He was accepted to the College of Architecture where he received a Bachelors Degree in Building Construction. Throughout Michael's life he remained an avid Gator football fan. Attending those games with his sons Cole and Clay was one of his favorite things to do. Following graduation, Michael accepted employment opportunities from several Design/Build contracting firms around Florida. He worked with Deville Contracting in Coral Springs, FRC in Orlando and ICI in Daytona Beach. During the early 1980's Michael learned the ins and outs of the industry. He was a valued employee during his tenure with these companies and was promoted and excelled in every area. In 1985, Michael realized the call of entrepreneurship and founded Signature Homes and Development, Inc., a residential, multi-family and commercial Design/Build firm. During those years Signature Homes was regarded as one of the premier luxury home builders in our city. After selling Signature Homes in 2000, Michael founded and was Managing Partner of numerous entities based in Jacksonville, engaging in the business of land ownership and extensive leaseholds for commercial and industrial space. Most recently, Michael was a construction and development consultant and an expert witness for construction defect litigation. During Michael's years of building a successful career, he also built a successful life with his family. In addition to surfing, Michael was passionate about many things including collecting classic cars and motorcycles; he was fascinated with any vehicle with a motor. All of these passions came second to his greatest passion, his passion for his sons. His love and relationship with them gave him his greatest joy and sense of accomplishment. Above all Michael was known as a family man. He was a wonderful father and spent most of his spare time with them. Michael's boys inherited many of his same passions. They spent hours surfing together in Atlantic Beach right down the street from the family home, and in other surf spots like Costa Rica and Tortola. They restored cars and motorcycles together and spent hours consulting with each-other about the next exciting classic car acquisition. Not only was Michael close to his two boys; he was beloved by all of their many school friends. They affectionately called him Big Man, and his home was always open to all of them. Neighbors of the Sones family were never surprised to drive or walk by and see many cars lining the street in the front of their home. Michael had great faith in the next generation and always supported and believed in them, helping them in any way he could. Michael never knew a stranger. Everywhere he went he easily made friends and everywhere he traveled he would run into people he knew; it was a phenomenon. Michael's legacy to those who knew and loved him was his abundant generosity and his fierce loyalty. Michael is preceded in death by his father Alan and his mother Dell. He is survived by his sons Cole and Clay, their mother Pat, his brother Jeff and niece and nephew, Carlee and Evan, his Uncles Lou and Bernie. There will be a Memorial Service to celebrate Michael's life at Beaches Chapel Church, 610 Florida Boulevard, Neptune Beach, Florida at 11:00 AM on Thursday, August 15, 2013.
