I called him "Pinky". I sat next to him in a high school class for one semester. His legs and feet took up two seats. We were class buddies where we engaged in adolescent debate for theological and political issues of those days. The war in Vietnam and my claim to agnostic beliefs at that time intrigued him. I still remember the look on his face when he asked me " If you don't believe in God, how can you really know peace?" How well he understood as I have come to learn.
In our daily classroom discussions what I remember most was how he openly shared with me was his love for his family. This was a young man enlightened beyond his years. Mr. and Mrs. Smith supported their children. There were few parents who attended the games much less transporting some of us home from the night games. They raised their children to be tolerant and free of racial prejudice. The results penetrated beyond the borders of Daly City, CA.
May his children and family be comforted knowing this kind of love, belief and duty remain in the hearts and souls he touched.

Dear Smith Family- My deepest condolences of the loss of Pinky. May you know that my prayers are with him and your family at this time. Though I was four years younger than Pinky and two years younger than Kenny I always appreciated watching those two play basketball at Jeff. Your family was always total CLASS. May Pinky rest in peace with the Lord.

To the Smith family our deepest condolences. My sister Dianne and I knew and loved Pinky. He was a true gentleman in all aspects of his life. Dianne is gone now also, so we remember the Jefferson class of 1970. A special hello to Kenny and Jocelyn. We hope a memorial to Pinky will take place in the Bay Area.

Andrea, Rebecca, and Deborah,
Julie and I continue to be thankful for the positive and encouraging influence that Robert shared with us in the short time that we knew him. In only our 2nd meeting with him at Julington Creek, he gave us a truly genuine brotherly hug as we entered the church bldg. We know him as a great brother and are confidant that as a father and husband, he fulfilled his role to the fullest. What a great Christian example to all who had the privilege of meeting him.
Love,
Richard and Julie Brand

"Finaly, brothers, think about good things and things that will be bring praise - whatever is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and honorable. Practice the things you learned from me, received from me, heard from me, or saw in me. The God of peace will be with you." (Philippians 4, 8-9)

The church in Kiel, Germany, will always remeber Robert for his friendly personality and great zeal in reaching people for Christ. Robert was one of the first people to become active in spreading the gospel to regions of northern Germany outside of Kiel. We profit from his efforts till this day.

Hallo Andrea & Kinder,

Dear Andrea, Deborah and Rebecca,
You know that our hearts go out to you at the loss of your loved one. But we all know Robert is in God's care at this time. This is our ultimate hope as Christians, and we thank God for His wonderful promises to all His faithful. Truly, a prince and great man has fallen in Israel this day.
We are left with fond memories of Robert when he and Eddie visited in our home in Salinas, CA., and of the few days you and Robert, Deborah and Rebecca spent in our home in San Jose and with the congregation at White Rd.

Dear Andrea, Rebecca and Deborah,
I thank God for you and the wonderful work and influence each of you have had and continue to have on so many. Your faith in the promises of our Lord and savior and your dedication to the gospel is inspiring, especially during such a loss. I suppose that is the true evidence of a living faith, thank you for such a wonderful example.
When I think of Robert's loving warm and genuine pesonality and how he affected me and oh so many, it helps me to imagine how special you were to him. You came second only to our Lord, but how he loved you. Your expression of love and great loss was so will put in your remembrance and farewell during his memorial service. I was and am moved by such deep love ,devotion and dedication.
May God keep you and may your days be full in the knowledge of what heaven holds for all God's children, where God will wipe away every tear.
In Christian love,
Your brother in Christ,

Robert's flame is alive in our hearts.
May we all have the courage to fight the good fight of faith the way he did, drinking from his fountain of encouragement. May we follow him to where he is, pulled in like Lot into safety and gently held in the hands of our dear Lord. In loving memory...

I have found memories of roaming the streets of Kiel with Robert, as well as traveling to the outskirts. He even got us trapped in a fenced inner-court of an apartment complex. We taught the word together, encouraged the brothers and enjoyed each other doing it.

Dear Andrea, Rebecca, Deborah and Family,
I am so sorry to hear about Peeky sudden death. Please accept my deepest sympathy and condolences.
How blessed I am to have been touched by Peeky's Kindness, friendship and admiration for life. Peeky was a true Gentlemen. I will always remember the talks we shared during high school and our common goal, to never give up on your dreams.
I never saw my friend Peeky again after our granduation from high school, but had a great time at our "Grand Nite in Disneyland" it was hard to say good-bye to my friend and even harder now.
I shared his pride when I heard that he was to be honored by Daly City and inducted into their Hall of Fame for his endevours in Basketball....his legacy will live on.
May God bless you always,

I have seen God do it before. Now I have seen God do it again. God has taken the very best for Himself. We shall see Pinky again. Another time in another wonderful place.
I had the privilege to reunite with Pinky after 38 years since High School on his trip to his old hometown of Daly City, Ca. last year in April for he, and his brother, Kenny's induction into The Daly City Sports Hall of Fame.
Over the years I had often wondered and asked our classmates when I saw one if anyone knew the whereabouts of Pinky Smith? All I could find out was he was a minister.
I was so supprised and delighted upon seeing him again that Pinky was just as friendly, warm and sincere as he had been when we were growing up in school.
I was sadden to hear of his sudden illness and passing.
My prayers and love will remain with The Smith Family during this very difficult time.

Dear Smith Family,
Our deepest sympathy and condolences go out to your whole family. I knew, "Pinky" as the most lovable, courteous, and helpful person. He always said hello to me and treated everyone that he knew and came across with respect. He made everyone feel important and never had a bad thing to say about anyone at Jefferson High School in Daly City, Ca. He was a great basketball player and was a great friend to everyone, faculty included. We all knew he would accomplish much in his life time. I was a freshman when Pinky was a Senior. He will be missed by so many and on behalf of the Estrada Family,(Carol and Eleanor) we all send our love to the family. May our loving "Pinky" be in God's loving hands forever!
Sincerely, Carol (Estrada, class of 73) Quigley and family, and Eleanor (Estrada, class of 1970) Perez.

Our deepest sympathies and condolences go out to the Smith Family.
Our family, the Francisco's (Rebecca, Pat, Vic & George) went to the same High School (Jefferson High) as Peeky, Kenny & Jocelyn back in Daly City. I was the little sister they use to have to trek around with them to all the basketball games, and I remember all of them very well. We were very fond of the friendship that was formed back in those days and we were very saddened to hear of the passing of Peeky. Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this time.

Living a life that matters doesn't happen by accident. It's not a matter of circumstances but of choice. Robert chose to live his life for God.

Dear family of Bro. Smith. I did not know Bro Smith. I was looking forward to meeting Bro Smith and his family when coming to Florida. I was so saddened to hear of his passing before I could meet him. Upon my arrival I was blessed with the opportunity to meet his lovely wife and daughters. From what I have seen and heard from the South Jacksonville Church of Christ, Bro Smith will be missed greatly. I will keep all those whom loved him in my prayers. What a blessing it is to know we can meet him in Heaven after while. Bless you all.
